Propane When Heat is Running

We have used our propane heater more in the last 4 days than in the last 4 years. A few weeks ago we cleaned out the burner and the propane nozzle, it was clogged. It tested OK so we thought it was set. It seems to be working OK but the heat it's producing does not seem to be very high. The 20 degree temps might have something to do with that. BUT, my one concern is that I detect an odor of propane come from the exhaust when the heater is running. I don't remember experiencing this before. Have others noticed this and is is normal? Thanks for any feed back. Chuck

Suspect you are producing CO. Flame should be very predominately blue. If you are seeing yellow you have too much gas or not enough oxygen supplying the flame. What did you use to clean the burner nozzle?

Soaked the nozzle in alcohol then blew it out with a can of air. The clog was very visible in the tip. Made sure it looked good before installing. Chuck

Nozzle clogged with what?
There may be more of whatever upstream.
Check it again.

FYI, when I last checked my furnace, I found the heat ducts leaking like crazy at the furnace box. Lots of screws and high temp tape later and the ducts blow warm air. Also found a couple of kinks in the tubes and straightened them out for better flow.

Nozzle just had a little chunk of unknown substance. Lines connected to nozzle were checked the best we could and nothing else seems to be present. It works OK, other than the propane odor. That seems to be worse at start up. Never noticed it before. Chuck

Unfortunately there is no way to "see" the flame in this furnace. Chuck

Check for cracks in the heat exchanger. The combustion process may also be accompanied by a thud or slight bang (not always).

Good advice posted above. Smell of propane in exhaust means incomplete burning. That usually produces soot and CO (carbon monoxide).

Soot will quickly clog your burners, in, and out tubes. CO is hazardous to your health even if outside.

Post make and model of furnace for better advice.

The furnace is a Suburban SF42. I'm not sure how to check for cracks in the heat exchanger. The weather has finally warmed up and we will be in the 80's here soon. Since this unit is 23 years old, I am considering replacing the insides of the unit. Chuck

I expected Old-Biscuit would post advice on this problem. He knows these appliances inside and out.

I looked at the parts manual for this furnace. I could not see how to observe the flame. Many people pull the furnace out and run it on a work bench for better access.
