Rear camera resolution

I notice the night time resolution on our 2004 Excursion is poor. Usually when I am towing, like to have a good view of my towed vehicle and tow bar connection. With poor resolution its hard to do. Any suggestion, anything I can do about it?

If you added an infrared LED bar to the back of the RV, it would improve the image in your monitor. Infrared would be invisible to following drivers, so you'd not get in trouble for displaying the wrong type of light to the rear of your RV.

The LED infrared light bars can be $100 or more, you might experiment with a few infrared LEDs first, see if it's better, before forking over the big bucks. Here's a pretty cheap IR LED array, you'd need to put it in a waterproof enclosure, but you get the idea.

Unfortunately, you need an Infrared capable camera to utilize an infrared light source. If your camera has a small whitish LEDs around the lens, you probably have an infrared capable camera. If that is the case, they may not be working.

Most cameras utilized in RVs have a low light setting that can be selected manually or automatically switch over. You might check to see if the day/night/automatic exposure has been selected, if possible, and which setting gives you the best picture.

The low light sensors can be damaged by continued exposure to bright lights or glare. Such as towing during the day with sun glare off your toad.

Due to the nature of video cameras, most every one of them is infrared sensitive. I used to demonstrate this in my classroom by aiming a TV remote at the camera and showing the 'invisible' blinking of the remote on the TV screen. In low light, often the image looks very grainy. Increasing the light, either visible (illegal on the back of a motor vehicle) or infrared, will improve the image. The LED infrared light I linked to is 2.99, plus shipping, give it a try.
