Rooftop A/C runs ~15sec then shuts off

I'm having trouble finding the problem with my Dometic Penguin II AC. The fan starts and runs about 12 seconds then the compressor kicks in, runs about 3 sec and then both shut off. Repeats every 1-2 minutes.

I switched boards with the another AC unit and still not working. The other unit continued to work with no problems.

Called out a mobile RV Tech and he got dometic on the phone and ran through the recommended tests and found nothing. They had him bypass the board by connecting 3 wires together to make it run continuous. It ran and cooled. Dometic said it must be the board or thermostat. Doesn't sound right to me since I've already switched the boards and the other 2 ACs are working fine with same thermostat. Any suggestions.

Low voltage on that ACs leg ?

Are the 2 working ACs on one leg of the 240 volts ?

Possibly a bad run capacitor. Not sure if the newer units have run and start capacitors but if so a bad run capacitor will allow it to start but not continue to run shortly after. Just a thought.

The 2 working ACs are on a separate leg but the voltage appears to be OK on both.

Ill check to see if it has separate capacitors for start/run. That sounds like a good possibility. thanks

It does have 2 capacitors. Do you have any suggestions on how to check if its working? Or any advice on removing and replacing?

Do you have a voltmeter that can measure capacitance values? Discharging those capacitors and measuring them is the easiest way to check them.

I have found that if you have a 9 volt ohm meter you can check them. It has been many many years since checked one this way. Typically I use a capacitor tester. It just clips a wire to each terminal, push the button and it C will give an auditable sound that tell you if it is good or bad. I will try to check tomorrow and give you more feedback.

Thanks for the info. I'm not going to be able to get to it for a couple of days. I'll post an update when I do.

OK, both capacitors tested good. I also switched the AC to the other 50 amp leg and got same results. Anyone have another suggestion? Do you know how I can find a someone to work on this that really knows these ACs? The mobile service guys I used were just going by rote.

Main Computer Panel

I was having similar issues with my A/C cycling on and off. I was also experiencing some electrical problems associated to my furnace. Turns out, at least with the furnace, there was a known problem with the touch screen control system for my unit. My dealer replaced the panel to fix the furnace... it appears to have also fixed the A/C problem!

I don't have a picture now but I can describe it.

Start capacitor is labeled with a range of 43-53 uf (tests as 55). Its connected between the board and the run capacitor.
The run capacitor is labeled 15/55 (tests 15/55). It has 5 white wires connected to common, 2 red to Herm and 1 brown to Fan.

Try disconnecting the start capacitor (black) Just need to remove the wires where it connects to the run capacitor. They are designed to run with only the run capacitor, the start is just a booster. Do you have access to a clamp on ammeter?
