Silly question: Whirlpool microwave/convection oven
The combo unit came with metal racks. Every time I use the microwave settings I remove the metal racks. Do I have to? I know with other microwave ovens it says not to use metal but I didn't know if this is the case with this particular unit.

Absolutely! You NEVER put metal in ANY microwave! Convection only!

True as far as it is stated. If you microwave a turkey, you can wrap small ends of the drumsticks with aluminum foil to keep them from overcooking while the rest of the bird cooks. I don't know if there's a preference for microwaving vs cooking a turkey with convection.

If it's like my Samsung unit it should be fine. Assuming it's the rack that spans the microwave and sits in the plastic clips on the sides.

I always removed the metal rack from our convection/microwave in our motor home when using the microwave. Recently, the above the range microwave in our house was replaced under warranty. The new microwave (no convection) had a metal rack very similar to the convection unit in our coach.
I asked the service tech who installed the unit about it and he informed me that as long as the rack was in the brackets it was fine.
I'm sure that's probably true or the unit would not be sold with a metal rack.
But... I removed the rack from the microwave and have never used it with the rack installed.
And.... We still remove the rack from the unit in the motor home when using the microwave.
I was always told to never put anything metal in a microwave.
Proof positive that you can't teach an old dog new tricks!

The issue with metal in a microwave is current building up on edges and arching (think of a spark plug). It's why you can't microwave a fork. Meanwhile, the racks are designed to not have any sharp edges, or have any surfaces close enough to allow arcing. I never bothered to take the rack out of my microwave in my house, and it's never been an issue.

Metal Racks are OK if designed for microwave!
I have a Whirlpool WMH76719 Convection/Microwave combo and have often used the rectangular metal rack for 2-level microwave cooking. It has a separate round metal stand you put on the turntable when using convection.
Just to be sure, I just chatted with Whirlpool and they confirmed, "The metal rack is for 2 level cooking in the microwave."
Also, the manual does state, "To avoid damage to the microwave oven, always remove rack after 2-level cooking. To avoid damage to the microwave oven due to soil buildup, clean rack supports often."
My Mom has an older Samsung microwave only, and it has a metal shelf for the same purpose. She only puts the rack in if wanting to microwave on 2 levels.

My GE Profile manual says it's ok to leave the metal rack in.
I just defrosted some chicken for the grill and left the metal rack in while the chicken sat on the rotating dish right below.

Good thread! I have a question in the reverse.
We have a GE micro/convection (15 years old). I always remove the metal rack when done with convection cooking, as per OM. But what of the turntable? Glass, on a rotating support, used for microwaving. But I find no clear instruction as to the turntable while using convection. Must it be removed? I have been doing so, but don't know if it's necessary. Can the turntable assembly tolerate 450-475 degrees?
Thanks!

We just made pizza in our GE Profile had the oven at 450°. The turntable survived. We never take it out.
