Suburban SF35 not lighting up
Hi,
On our way down from Ontario, the first night (read cold), the furnace stopped heating half way through the night. The fan would run, but no heat.
After arriving in Florida, I ordered the most likely failure items from eBay for a total of $36.60, and after they arrived I proceeded to disassemble the furnace. Of course, in order to get to the electrode assembly, which is what I decided to replace first, you have to literally take everything apart. Most of the work only requires a phillips screwdriver and a couple of open end wrenches to remove the gas connection to the furnace and the gas line out of the gas valve. There is also an allen head screw that tightens the clamp around the hot air blower on the right side of the motor, that would not fit any of my metric or sae allen keys. I ended up using small pliers to loosen it up and remove the clamp.
FOUND: a big chunk of rust obstructing the orifice where gas comes out to the burner. Inside the gas line there was quite a bit of rust dust. I removed the gas line out of the gas valve and blew on it to remove the rust debris. Reassembled, and tested for gas leaks with soapy water. Turned furnace on and it runs like new, except for a horribly loud and high pitch screach out of it, which was there before but not for so long. It eventually settles down to an intermittent screach, but eventually I will have to either replace the motor or have its bushings replaced at an electric motor rebuilder back home.
Just wanted to share my experience, hoping it will help someone else.
