Surge protector placement

Planing a DP bus conversion, wondering on surge protector placement. Haven't decided between a nice 15,000J with just the indicator lights, or a 12,000J with a digital display. Will be getting a plug in unit, but where to put it?

The plan is to have a long cord on a reel in one of the compartments. Will have the female end at the reel, and plug the bus either into the reel, or into the generator, no transfer switch.

That leaves me with two options. Plug the protector in at the pedestal, out in the open, or put it at the reel in the compartment. I am very familiar with most electrical, but not in this area. I can see the pros of in the compartment, just for keeping it semi secure and out of the weather.

Assuming the cord on the reel is good quality, the plan is to put a fully sealed extension on it instead of making up a cable, is there a valid reason to put it at the pedestal instead?

Dave01a, I don't use a cord reel, but I cannot see any advantage to plugging the EMS into the pedestal when you can plug it in inside. It's out of the weather, and no chance of theft or forgetting it when it's on the post.

I do have a hard wired unit with the remote display.

That was my thought on inside as well, protected from the weather and sticky fingers at the same time. Just wanted to make sure I wasn't missing something. In my mind, placing it inside would be equivalent to a hard wired unit.
