Toilet woes

Well, our front pedal thetford toilet, the spring snapped off and the ball remained open. My husband closed it with a channel lock pliers and then took a look at the spring, the loop on its end was broken, so he went 35 miles into town to two rv service places and neither of them had the stupid spring. He came home and made the broken loop smaller and got it on. Now the toilet is working but water is coming in very slowly and is filling the toilet and this has never happened before. We think it is the valve so we are ordering new parts, meanwhile I am afraid to leave the toilet for any amount of time for fear it will overflow. Oh gee, it is the most important part of our house on wheels. We will probably shut the water off overnight and deal with it tomorrow, anyone else ever have this problem.

Turn off your water pump until you need it.
Good Luck

This is another reason I never run on city water. I fill the tank and run from it. Then turn off the pump(when I remember) as I leave the RV. HAVE seen more than one flooded RV.

X2 - This is what I do as well - but I don't stay in one place very long.

Hmm, could be the excuse you need to warrant a new compost toilet......

I have a 1/4 turn shutoff on the incoming city water line. When I leave I just turn it off and no worries.
Your problem is why it is important to carry spare parts for your toilet. The parts were cheaper than your trip and time looking for a solution to the problem.

I hate that stupid spring! I've fixed / replaced mine several times too.

One suggestion. Put a shut-off valve on the water line running into the back of the toilet. That way, you can secure water just to the toilet when you have an issue like this, when you need to clean the down chute, and any other time you want some insurance against the toilet overflowing.

I've noticed that, if the toiled is flushed while I'm filling my fresh water tank, a small amount of water will leak by the valve and slowly fill the bowl. So, I always use the shutoff valve to prevent the toilet from overflowing.

Oh well, it's probably time to buy a new RV, anyway.
