Tomato Sauce in Holding Tanks?
I heard that you should not rinse tomato based sauces into your holding tanks. Apparently they are difficult to break down & cause issues in the tanks over time. Confirm or Deny?

I would say it depends on how much basil is in the sauce, also if you put oregano in it that may change the PH balance. Pesto is a whole different story, don't get me started....

Deny!
They are “holding tanks”. What they are holding shouldn’t be left in them long enough to break down. But some do.

Scrape off the excess sauce outside, and don't worry about the rest.
Unless there are red water dumping laws

Fill, dump ---repeat
Wipe pots/pans/plates of oils/grease and food particles prior to washing dishes
Use trash can for leftover that need to go.
Do NOT make RVng so complicated

Deny!! Think of your stomach as a holding tank, so much for ketchup and fries.

Hi ! Welcome to IRV2! We're sure glad you joined the gang!
I guess I'm not seeing the problem. Why not just wipe the excess into the trash with a paper towel instead of letting it go down the drain?
Good luck, happy trails, and God bless!

Might stain the inside of the gray tank and affect the level sensors but I don't see either the color or acid content affecting the tank integrity.

This HAS to be a HUGE problem in both motorhomes, 5ers and trailers throughout the industry. I see replacement in holding tanks - gray and black water.
Good grief! Hurry Spring, please.

I have acid reflex so I know it affects my stomach. As far as the holding tank, I just wipe off everything, the dish and pot I used to heat up the sauce, with a paper towel, throw the paper towel in the trash and then hand wash the dish and pot. I do the same with any grease or oil. Never wash that stuff down the drain. Not because of holding tank issues but because I don't want the drain to clog.

First time I heard that rumor, but then I've only been RVing for 40+ years.
The only possibility I can think of is pure tomato paste settling on the bottom, the tank rinser should remove it though.

does that apply to organic too????
its a holding tank, which is frequently emptied, if you are doing it right.
don't overthink it. iv'e been rving in motorhomes since 1967. i have not encountered a problem with tomato sauce.
other things, like the wife not using enough water to completely flush the toilet, resulting in a mound in the tank. nothing that cant be fixed,
im looking forward to spring too.

The only possible problem I could see is if you make your own sauce from unpeeled tomatoes. And only if you leave the skins in the sauce. And then, only if you have a macerating pump to empty the tank. And only if your kitchen sink drains into your black tank which is emptied with said macerating pump.
Why, you are thinking? We have a combined black/gray tank. When I've used our macerating pump to empty, I have noticed that particularly stringy food waste that ends up in the tank can get caught up on the blades in the pump. Doesn't happen often, but tomato skins have been spotted in the pump when I've had to clean it.
All that being said, I would guess that this would only apply to about 1% of all rigs out there. So no, I really don't see any problem with rinsing tomato-based sauces into the holding tanks.
