Water filtering

Hi all,

I just sanitized our tank for the 1st time since purchasing it in July.

Last year we carried gallon water jugs which we filtered at home, we camp mainly in state parks so fill up our tanks on the way in.

Should I place a sediment filter on the water tank inlet? and if so what type?

Also should I look at a whol coach system.

We are happy to bring water jugs for 3-4 day trips but if for a week it may get a bit much to filter at home.

Thanks,

Stephen

This is really a personal choice. Everyone has a reason for doing it the way they do.

We generally buy bottled water for drinking and use water from tanks/campground for anything else. We use a disposable Camco in-line filter when filling the water or hooked up. They aren't perfect but have worked fine for our purposes.

Personally, I'm fine with using water from the tank or campground all the time but my wife is more particular. I've never had any health issues from doing it.

Water filtering

Hi, Stephen.... In my view, anything that reduces the PITA factor will likely be a good thing. Many state parks and campgrounds use well water, which, though perfectly clean and usable, is always vulnerable to sediments in the outflow. If these sediments get into your MH, they can wear on valves and jam up faucets, shower heads, aerators, etc. Also, well water in different areas can have different flavors, depending on mineral content.

I set up a two-canister whole house system using the standard 10 inch cartridge size. See pic below. Park water first comes to my regulator (set @ ~55 psi), then to a 5 micron sediment, then a 5 micron charcoal (taste and odor). All coach water goes through the filter, except the line I use to flush the black tank. We use house water for all purposes-- cook, shower, tooth brush, etc. I drink house water, but DW and the cat prefer bottled. We full time, so we're using the system constantly. We've only sanitized the system 2-3 times in 5 years.
CAVEAT: since we full time, the equation changes. If you use your RV intermittently and store it for long periods, your sanitizing requirements may well be different.Click image for larger version

I would recommend the rvwaterfilterstore.com. Dave, the owner, is available by email or phone for suggestions.

Our coach has a house type charcoal filter at the water inlet for the entire coach. At the galley there is a separate outlet for drinking or cooking that is filtered again by a smaller filter located under the sink. I use that water for drinking but the DW still requires bottled water for drinking.

Stephen, I would use one of the Camco blue in-line filters in the freshwater hose from the spigot to remove the larger crud. Then install a high-quality solid carbon block filter rated at 1/2 micron under the sink with separate faucet to use for all the water you consume. You can easily use a push-on "T" fitting to connect this.

With this setup it won't matter where you are getting your water, from the tank or a CG spigot!

MsHappyCampers,

That sounds good, I will start with the hose option. Does it alow down the tank filling time?

No, you get full flow through that filter. They recommend changing it every 3 months. I found out the hard way that if you don't do that it can SEVERELY restrict your water flow!

You can get those from Wal-Mart. The initial package with the filter and short hose is about $18. They sell a 2-pack of the replacement filters for $25. Amazon has the 2-pack (Camco 40045) on sale right now for $17.64 with free shipping!

Just looking at that one, also going to get a water bandit.

Can the filter be hooked up to the water filling hoses in state parks? They are the overhead type on a boom?

I think you may be referring to the water hoses on the flexible booms at the dump stations? If so, those are NOT for drinking water!

What is a water bandit?

Normally there are 2 hoses, one is potable and the other is for rinsing after dumping, at least that's what I have seen in the half dozen places in Michigan I have gone too.

A water bandit is a hose adapter with a silicone end that will connect to faucets that are damaged or worn, or ones with no thread.

Our state parks in this area don't have two hoses!

The water bandit would be a good thing to have. I'll check that out. Thanks!

OOPS! It says it's not intended to be used under pressure!
