Water heater drain plug leaking

My drain plug hole was really rusty and the plug only went in one revolution. It worked for a month but now I have a tiny stream spraying from it. I’m in my busiest time of year and haven’t had time to try to fix it. I need to know the size of tap I need to buy to fix the threads. Is it a standard size across all of these RV water heaters?

Are you using a nylon plug? If not, get one.

Should be 1/2-14 NPT.
I put a ball valve in mine so it's easier to drain.

A 1/2" NPT plug measures about 3/4". 1/2" refers to the internal size of 1/2" NPT pipe.

YEP^^^^^

Atwood.....1/2" NPT

Suburban ....3/4" NPT

Hardware store.....brass nipple if Atwood & steel nipple if Suburban
Cut some 'slots' lengthwise in threads......3-4 slots then screw nipple in/out cleaning/chasing the drain hole threads
Taps are expensive unless you already have a set

Once threads are cleaned up......use a new Nylon plug/Atwood or Andoe Rod/Suburban (couple wraps of tape for anode rod)

NPT threads are not sized like your regular UN threads where 1/2 bolt measures 1/2”. A 1/2” NPT thread will be approx 3/4”

There's no need to buy a ˝ NPT tap, go to an AutoZone parts store and borrow one. They loan tools free. The way it works is, you ask to borrow a ˝ NPT tap, they copy down your CC number, your name and address and hand you the tool.
When you return the tool, they hand you the slip of paper back. If the tool is not returned they buy a new one and charge your CC.

I forgot to say; only use a tap to clean out the threads, do not cut any metal out or the plugs will not seat enough to seal.
