Question Water heater only works a few seconds when on gas

We have an '03 Monaco Camelot (2nd owners 12 yrs) with the original Atwood 10 gal water heater and it works fine on 120v but on gas only(dry camping) the flame comes on for about 10-12 seconds then goes off and it does this for all 3 cycles before DSI defaults. Everything looks clean and the ignitor is good. Any suggestions on what the problem may be?
Blessings

Think fuel supply is shutting down. Are other gas appliances ok?

Yes we were dry camping and the stove worked fine on gas. It actually ran for several minutes and got the water hot one time after I cleaned the ignitor tips but then it defaulted again and will only run for a few seconds after resetting
Flame looks good while it's on but simply will not stay on.

It sounds to me like it would be your thermocouple has gone bad. The thermocouple is used to detect a flame when your first lighting and if you do not get A flame, or the flame gets blown out, after it is lit, it shuts the gas off.

Yep, dirty igniter/flame sensor, same piece. Atwood service manual.

mine has done this in the past and it was the wire connections on the front of the heater. There is a temp sensor and maybe one other. I just wiggled them to make a better connection.

The fact that you were cleaning the burner and playing around inside that cavity and it started to work for one cycle leads me to think that maybe you do have the loose connection as mentioned above. Definitely the first place and start make sure all your connections are good.

Then again if the original thermocouple is 18 years old it may have reached the end of its service life.

Spark electrode has dual fucntions:
*Provide high voltage spark for ignition
*Return path for Flame Proving ....miiliamp current that circuit board must detect to keep DC on gas valve solenoid
No FLame Proving ...no DC on gas valve

Dosen't take much to stop milliamp current
Dirty electrode tip
Wrong spark gap
Bad wire connection at circuit board transformer/inside the ceramic insulator at electrode
Cracked ceramic insulator...current goes to ground
Bad circuit board

SO...did you find the issue...replace the spark electrode?

Is it now working??????????

2003 Camelot Water Heater DSI issue

Well , thanks for all the great insight on my water heater and it's not working on DC current. I cleaned all connections to no avail , then cleaned off ignitor and checked gap (OK) . Finally , I just ordered a new board and ignitor since they are 18 years old!
WaLa , IT'S NOW WORKING GREAT on DC !!!
Blessings to each of you for all the input
This is an awesome forum!!!
