Dean82,

Your Post has been moved to its own Thread in a better Forum for the question.

Sounds like a faulty pressure release valve to me.

Best luck

Is it really steaming hot with the burner not turning automatically off? If so then its the high temp switch not turning the burner off and the PTR valve releasing otherwise its most likely a defective PTR valve.

The water heater in an RV is setup with the same basic controls and safety valves as a gas water heater in your home with the exception that the RV unit has a remote on/off switch.

My water heater did the same...the water temp monitoring mechanism became detached from the water tank.

The are behind an adhesive insulated patch and there are two of them. They are in bayonet twist lock sockets that get loose over time so that they are no longer making good contact with the front of the tank. You have to remove the insulation, then the thermostats and then press the tangs on the twist mounts on the tank back in so that they are flat and no longer bent outward. The twist lock mounts are usually of thin sheet metal and bend very easily. If that does not fix the tank from overheating then the thermostats will need to be replaced.

It may also mean the tank is overfilled, thus allowing no room for expansion as the water heats up. Open the pressure relief valve and fill until water begins to flow out the valve. Turn water source off, then close relief valve.
