Water Heater Problem

I have a Suburban SW6DE water heater that is producing a lot of soot with an orange flame. Since there isn't a flame adjustment on this model, doesn't this indicate the gas valve needs to be replaced?

Thanks,
Jim

There should be an air shutter to adjust. See the video.

Suburban does not have an air shutter.....no need to look for one
*Atwood has that

Suburban relies on gas flow pulling the air in via venturi effect

Sooting is due to fuel rich condition

Need to clean the orifice and burner tube
*No poking thru orifice/no high air pressure ---will damage the orifice
Soak in alcohol/air dry
Burner tube...small bottle brush

Smallest debris/spider webs will unset the air/fuel ratio
Propane is on 0.39psi so doesn't take much to cause imbalance

Your gas valve is fine---they work or don't
You have flame just need the correct air mixture
