Water heater turned on with no water in the system

Just back from a trip and noticed the water heater had been left on after we dumped.

It was on for about 2 hours.

The water system is empty (and my wife wants it left that way).

Can this damage the water heater?

You burned out the electrical element. Only takes a few short moments with no water. Might as well buy one.

Did you have it connected to city water, but have the fresh water tank empty? You never winterized since the trip?

If so your water heater still had water in it it just was not under pressure. No damage done.

If you did not pull the plug on the tank you are OK. If you had it on electric the only way it would have been on is if you had the inverter on or if the propane was on going down the road.

Most folks use the term dumped when they talk about dumping the gray and black water tanks. This doesnt drain the freah water from the RV. That being said all the coaches I have owned with a tank type water heater, the heater still retains water even if the fresh water system has been drained. There is a drain on the water heater to remove water.

The hot water, low point drain and fresh water tank were empty when the heater was on.

I did not notice it until I got back to the storage.

As the system is empty I will need to add water to test.

I appreciate the replies.

The hot water low point drain in the water ray had been opened.

Simply draining the lines (including the hot water line) would still leave water in the water heater tank, in which case you may be ok. If YOU drained the water heater tank and then turned the element on, I'm not sure how you could justify blaming the RV service shop.

Hi all,

I am silly, I just realized it was the water pump that was left on.

My apologies for the brain fart.

Would this have damaged the water pump?

Thanks all,

1stMH,
Damage to the water pump is a possibility, depending on how long it ran dry.
Please add info about your Rv in the signature area of your profile.

Hi Dan,

It's a 2005 Damon Daybreak 3270f. I did not know I had to resetup my signature when I moved from using the full site to the Android app.

I can't imagine an extension cord long enough to drive for 2 hours with the water heater plugged in.

Of course the OP never said his w/h even has an electric element.

Bet he's got a generator onboard.
