Water pressure regulator problems

We bought a preset Camco pressure regulator for our travel trailer. It works most of the time, but after it has been sitting for awhile it builds up pressure. When open a faucet or flush the toilet, the oressure is extremely high for a brief moment a d then settles down.
I assume it's slowly leaking past the valve. Anyway, thinking I had a defective one, I replaced it with another one. This was a different model, but still from Camco. It does the same exact thing.
Can someone recommend a good regulator that actually maintains a regulated pressure?

Thanks,
Philip

You may want to pick up a water pressure gauge from one a hardware store to see what the actual pressure is coming out of the tap.

I agree with you. Both regulators are defective. They should not leak the city water high pressure through. If you can, return them as defective.

I don't have a recommendation for you. Camco is not known for high quality. This one will likely work better for you.

I have a regulator, but have not used it. I rarely connect to city water.

I've been using this one for less than half the price: https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/...?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Phillip…. I’ve seen this phenomenon myself occasionally. Park pressure usually runs in the 40-50psi range, but sometimes it creeps up to a higher value, usually when very few folks at the park are using water. Then one person opens a faucet, gets that little pop, and that normalizes the pressure throughout.
I have an adjustable pressure regulator with a pressure gauge on each side, so I can simultaneously read the park pressure and the inside motorhome pressure.
Prices of good, serviceable adjustable regulators have come down substantially in the last couple of years. You can pick up a reasonably good unit for $25-$35. That little cylindrical unit you bought for 10 bucks was never intended to be a precision device. Like the Pirate Code in those Johnny Depp movies years ago, it’s “…more of a guideline…”. Water pressure gauges have always been pretty cheap, and with a few bucks more for a few fittings you can know exactly what your pressure is in real time. Good Luck

Yeah, I guess I shouldn't buy cheap stuff and expect it to work well. Although it makes me hesitant to buy Camco products. Anyway, thanks for the responses, I'm going to go with an adjustable one that's more than 10 bucks. Hehe.

What you have been using is a pressure restrictor and not a regulator. A settable regulator with a gauge is what you need to get full flow at the required pressure. 50 or 55 psi is a good setting.

I’m on my second of those oil-filled gauges from Amazon. It works great, just be sure to take it with you when you leave. I left one with a Y and quick connects in a park a couple of months ago. I need to make a checklist of the checklists to write up.

Alway good to back up

X2 or what ever on checking your teardown checklist. Left one in a park last year just before heading home. This year made it all the way home intact. On that note. If you are inclined, get your back up water pump in advance as well. Had to get one from a local shop this spring. Paid more than double the Amazon price. Ouch.

One similar to this for years now and no issue. I did have to replace the gauge.

I have a checklist but do it a little differently with index cards. I just put a post on here about this in the "General Discussion" room "Hitting your head on the awning arms" post # 60.
Check it out if you like.
