Water Regulator can go bad!

The little brass cheap water regulators seems quite solid built. I had one go bad so I guess it is possible. If you run the water full pressure the think makes lots of noise and the water just spurts out a bit. It seems to do ok with water at the site turned down a bit (current location does have high pressure). So, replaced it with another from WalMart and all if fine. So, I guess they can stop working correctly?

I gave up on the cheap water regulators and went with a Watts whole house adjustable regulator. Had it set for 65 psi which according to Winnebago is fine. Got it and the hose fittings at Home Depot. Not cheap but after 12 years it was still working.

Two pages:
Page 1: If you mean those little brass cylinder shaped ones.. My personal opinion is they are bad before they leave the factory. They restrict the flow of water too much for a decent shower.. Ok for brushing teeth though.

Page 2:
Any and All regulators will, in time, go bad. .Zurin, Watts and I suspect Sur-Flo (A watts company) can be rebuilt restoring full operation.

What happens when they go bad? Well.. they turn into the little brass cylinders and restrict flow.

I have been known to put a pressure guage on both sides of my regulators..

Brand new ZURIN (Did this with the watts but so long ago....)

Inlet side,,, Over 100 PSI
Outlet: No water flow 50 psi
Outlet one faucet fullon 50 PSI
Outlet shower full on 49 PSI

10 year old Watts and sur-flo

Input 100,, Static 50,, Shower on 4-5 PSI.
Time for a rebuild

It is that simple. Of course the Watts and Zurin 3/4 inch with adapter will set you back between 50 and 80 dollars.. But worth it.

n5pht..... The problem with those cheap cylindrical regulators is 1) they are cheap, and 2) they are not heavy enough to make a good boat anchor.

X2 on the good quality adjustable. A Watts 263 or a Valterra 1117 will serve you well.

Thanks to all - looks like I will be looking into a better regulator!
