A 20# "bottle" of propane can hold about 4.7 gallons of propane. Propane weighs 4.2 pounds per gallon.

njs42 has stated the facts right on. I think many of us are confusing the size of our propane bottles in terms of pounds and gallons. Most of the commercial bottles sold at the box stores are measured in pounds. These are usuallly 20, 30, and 100 pound bottles. The large motorhome propane tanks are measured in gallons. My Manchester shows tank capacity 24.0 gallon. Also according to my local propane man these as stated by Norm can only be filled to about 80%.
I just filled my tank up and it costs me $3.69/gallon which included our state sales tax.

$3.05 a gallon delivered at my site. Not really overpriced as if I had to take the tanks out it runs $2.69-2.99 a gallon

Last week here in Benson AZ at the local propane shop (not Loves or the KOA), I paid around $17 for a 5 gallon refill (empty 20lb tank) plus another 1 gallon top off in my other tank. They told me they have the cheapest propane in Benson which very may well be true since they provide residential service too, not just RV/grill tank refills. They were the nearest place to where I'm staying so I went to them.

Just for information the Costco in Bakersfield California just installed a propane filling station. Had a 5 gallon tank filled couple days ago think it was $11. They also do motorhomes there. Should also mention they put in diesel tanks also. Might be worth checking Costco in other areas
