I have 4 Outback Power Nano-Carbon 200NC, 178 AH 12V AGM Batteries and 900 watts of solar
Samsung RF18, all new LED tv's, all lights LED
Propane oven /stove, propane/electric hot water, propane /heat pump heat.
I have gone 4 days before needing to run generator for A/C, but could survive on solar only without needing A/C

What size house battery bank do you have?

6 235 amp flooded 6volts -705amp bank total
960 watts solar 2 original 80w panels and 8 new 100w panels ( 3 years new)
2500 w pure sine inverter on 24 7
Boondock 2 months a year with lots of 1-3 day casino stays while on the move
Still have the norcold ( Dutch cooling unit ) and cooktop propane

My take on the batteries replacement if one goes bad
Its no problem to replace just one
I’ve always been told a new battery in the bank of older ones will be brought down to the older batteries level. If they are all near replacement then I can see a cost issue and makes sense to replace all but your replacing a “failed “ battery ... hopefully with some warranty help. ( free?) It only needs to last as long as the rest in the original bank , another 2-3-4 years ? Then replace them all. It’s more cost effective to get the additional life out of the existing battery’s in that case. No damage will occur and in fact the older batteries may get a little more boost from the new one certainly not much but...

We are energy hogs with a almost constant 12-15 amp draw sat tuners “on “ 24 7
Computers vent fans lights ( led) ice maker coffee maker on (kuerig) etc and if sunny go days with no generator use. I do occasionally run the generator in the am to get a fast boost at 90-100 amp charge rate for a hour +\- and then let the solar do a full top off + of the batteries the rest of the day. That last 10% is hard to stuff into a flooded battery and best handled by solar
My next move will be to lithium 4-500 amp pack .. faster charging with no taper at the end. Also the ability for full amp draw ( large items) with no / minor voltage drop to the inverter.

I have room for two more 8D batteries. If the rig had been ordered as all electric it would have the 6 8D's already. It originally had a gas cooktop, I replaced it with a True Induction cooktop. If I was going to boondock much I'd have to upgrade the solar array though.

Hi Mr D,

2 or 3 8D batteries would be perfect for me :-)

If not too late to help you in your decision, my more input!

X's 4 Lifeline L16's = 800AH
1200W High Efficiency Panasonic/Sharp 48V panels
Samsung Residential
Boondocking? Three years ago, about 30-40% of the time. More recently, less then 5% of the time. Future? Expect 20-30% of the time to be more of the norm.

We too are energy hogs. I did install LED in the majority of the lights used the most. I sized our battery bank at double of what I thought I needed. I did this to have reserve capacity, and allow for shaded campgrounds and cloudy days. As well as living basically on the top 25% of SOC, and thus lower Life Cycle usage.

I was going to shift to Lithium when the last bank of Lifeline L16's went out, but they went out about 1 1/2 - 2 years earlier then I expected. (My error, as I had settings off while the coach is in storage, and looks like I 'walked my battery bank down', via sulfate build up.) Lifeline helped me quite a bit, as well as Magnum and many members here on this board, and other's. And then Lifeline offered me a replacement bank of L16's at a price I just could not pass up. I like the performance of our bank, and it was more about saving weight in my thinking to switch to Lithium.

We all look at things from different needs and perspectives. That's why you see crossover in responses between Wet Cells - AGM's - Lithium - Carbon. Form almost full time boon docking - to none, to very little... No right or wrong, just choices on which way to go, and budget expenditure!

Best to you, and all,
Smitty

I have 6-6v AGM batteries connected in series/parallel for a total of 672Ah.

To accomplish this I replaced my starting batteries with house batteries. All 6 are on the same tray.

I have an RV Dometic LP/AC fridge plus a AC/DC Freezer in the basement.

I boondock 90% of the time and for that reason I have solar
