Aircraft band scanner antenna

Hi!

New to iRV2 forums. Here is the back story.

My buddy and I (both Tech license) attended Airventure this year and camped with the airplane. We are not doing that again! I had camped with the airplane before, but I must be old enough now that it just generally made us miserable. So, we bought a 5th wheel to rehab (K-Z 2850 Sportsmen with a bad roof).

Rehab is nearly complete. We have taken it camping s couple times with our families. So far, so good! Since it's primary mission is Oshkosh, we put a Bearcat scanner in it. Mounted a small 1/4 wave and the performance is dismal. Then it hit us...no ground plane native in a camper.

We want this mounted on the side, near roofline, without penetrating roof. A discone is probably a good choice, but hard to mount on side. Also concerned about how it would act in wind when towing. We don't want to erect it each time.

Thought about a marine VHF antenna, but they are in the 156-174Mhz range. We need 108-136Mhz. Or doesn't it matter that much?

Thoughts? What would be a good small antenna we could permanently mount that would give decent performance and not get torn apart when traveling down the road?

Thanks!
Chris

assuming you'll be camping on the grounds and not a commercial campground miles away you will likely suffer a bit of degradation with the marine antenna but not so much to make a big difference. but do a search for a no-ground-plane aviation band antenna or at least a VHF NGP antenna that covers a wider portion of the band than the marine antenna before you buy anything.
