VW ID Buzz

I was a little surprised when my son told me he saw a new VW van at the dealer.

From reading on this forum and other places, I thought it could not meet smog requirements in the US. It apparently can if it is an BEV.

The TFLcar YT channel has one they are reviewing. Some good, some bad. Charger network when you are not near the coasts is the biggest issue with traveling in one since VW didn't buy into the Supercharger network. It would be a great around town soccer mom van.

Not if cost is a factor.

I am looking for something smaller but so far it comes down to paying more for less.

It is that old 'I have a RV so I can sleep in my own bed'.

If someone is looking for a 3 row EV, this and the Kia EV9 are about the same price and everything else is more (Volvo, Rivian, etc.). Between those two, I would probably lean toward the EV9, but this certainly has more style and more room in the 3rd row for 2 adults / big kids. Of course, EVs are not for everyone and not everyone needs a 3-row vehicle. If you have good cheap self-charging at home or office, and don't take it on many long trips where you have to charge at expensive 3rd party fast chargers, you can make the higher price back and then some with cheaper fueling and maintenance costs over the life of the vehicle. That is a lot of "ifs", and some of them don't fit well with RVing.

Someday someone will make a flat tow EV that charges when you are going downhill over a certain % grade, which would assist the RV's engine braking in addition to arriving at your destination with a charged toad. It could potentially be programmed to carry its own weight up the hills too. Someone is already prototyping an EV travel trailer to basically do this.
