Workhorse plant
(Union City, IN)--The news is not good for the Randolph County economy…Workhorse Custom Chassis in Union City is expected to close its doors for good Wednesday. It means that the majority of the 180 employees who remained at the plant will be laid off this week. Workhorse had originally announced plans to close in August of last year. At that point, company leaders said that the plant would close by November of last year. More orders than expected allowed the company to continue to operate nearly a full year past the anticipated closure. But all of that comes to an end Wednesday. Workhorse opened back in 1999 and produced chassis for trucks, vans, and motor homes. It was then purchased by Navistar in 2005. Much of the work has shifted to a Navistar plant in the northern Indiana town of Wakarusa. A trade magazine is reporting that employees will be given a severance package. Local Workhorse administrators have referred all questions to the corporate headquarters in Illinois. Workhorse Custom Chassis is located on State Road 32 in Union City.
