As to the chap that lives on the Continental Divide with a gas class A getting 8 MPG? Leaving home maybe, getting back not so much .

When I towed my travel trailer with my 3/4 Ton chevy gas truck I got 8 miles per gallon at 60-65 mph. Traded the gasser for a 3/4 ton Diesel Duramax and I consistently get 12-13 miles per gallon at a steady 65 mph. Towed all out west, High altitude etc no difference in average MPG. If you do the math at 1000 miles of driving with the gasser that is 125 gallons of gas equals 56cents a mile.... Diesel is 84 gallons at 46cents a mile. I will stick with my diesel when it comes to towing....

If you are that concerned with the cost of fuel. Take much shorter trips. Most of us live near an area that a tourist will go to. We just don't think about going there because it's "local". Go to your local tourist information center (pretty much every town has one) or log onto your state's tourism website. Have a tourist book sent to you. Get a touristy state map and draw a few circles around your home, 50 miles, 100 miles, 150 miles, 200 miles. You should find campgrounds, museums, art galleries and small towns to wander thru. You don't have to drive over 1000 miles to go on vacation. Another site to visit is https://www.onlyinyourstate.com where you can find some popular and obscure places to go play tourist. Upside is that you are not driving so far so you can either spend more time visiting places or go to more places.

You can cut down on costs in many ways to offset the cost of fuel. If you really want to use that RV then go!

Any vehicle I have had other than motorcycles, it used to work out to 3 times the cost of fuel per mile to operate.

Figure in your initial cost averaged out over the life span, plus insurance, maintenance, repairs and fuel. I bet you will get around 3 times the cost of fuel alone at last years price. Maybe it has changed now.

More than once I have chuckled when driving West I see lots of MoHo's coming East. I laugh that we are driving 2000+ miles to see their local surroundings and they are doing the same thing with us. Neither has checked out their own local "stuff".

One trip I was talking to a park ranger about Prairie Dogs. He was telling me all about how they can be a nuisance. I said "So basically I drove 1500 miles to see your version of a ground hog?" He said "Yup"

Energy independence doesn't have anything to do with the price of fuel in the USA, crude is priced based on the global market, even if the USA produced 110% of the fuel we use, we'd still be paying high prices, it's not like Exxon gives US buyers a discount, if world crude is priced at $120, they aren't going to sell it to American consumers for $80.

Pumping more oil would help the world market prices a bit by increasing demand, but it wouldn't bring prices down to 2021 levels.

That is exactly what I averaged with my 2006 3/4 ton Chevy with the Duramax, though I usually ran 62 mph. Overall average over several years towing a 35' 5er was 12.2 mpg. I was very happy with that.

We made a short run yesterday to a CG in the next state over. It included about 70 miles of interstate.
I usually run speed limit or 70, whichever is lower. I decided to honor my wallet and run 65. I was amazed how much slower the 18 wheelers were running, I even had to pass a few of them to maintain 65.
If it was just fuel that was pinching us all it'd be one thing but everything is crazy.

I am glad I sold my last PSD Excursion with 44 gallon tank in 2007 and switched to an 8.1 big block 3500 Chevy van. It would cost over $300 to fill it up at diesel prices here in my area that are as high as $7.29 !

25 foot Winnebago Via on a Mercedes Sprinter chassis, my average is presently 14.7 MPG hand calculated. My usual speed is 62-65 MPH. No toad. 26 gallon tank.
