I was on the flight deck of the CV-67 in New York Harbor for the International Naval Review and saw the festivities for the Statue of Liberty "Liberty Weekend" way back ... in July 1986. We were as close as you could get to the statue. The fireworks display was amazing! When I was there, they had F14s on the flight deck. I had the distinct pleasure of participating in an FOD sweep before we received a helo aboard.

Driver my last command I was the line division Leading Petty Officer. So I was in charge of FOD walk downs. Been there done that. I normally led them from an area that would give me to walk around our aircraft. That would give me one last look at our aircraft before launch. It would allow me to find anything that was wrong with them. That hadn't been caught by the guys that worked for me.

If they didn't leak we knew something was wrong.

We spent 3 days, 2 nights out there in a 19' boat w/cuddy cabin . . . I think that we were one of the smallest boats to stay overnight. We were anchored south of the statue surrounded by hundreds of bigger boats. The bottom is so hard there, current & winds were strong . . . many had troubles staying "hooked". It was quite an experience. From what I remember, they were launching identical fireworks from 5 sites at the same time. It was amazing!

I enjoyed my boating days, but I'm happier with me RV!
