Carrying 20# Propane Tanks

Where is the best place on an all electric motor home to carry a 20# propane tank to use for outdoor cooking since all storage areas are airtight. I thought to perhaps carry it in the toad. Am I overthinking this?

Propane has to be vented to the outside somehow.

Even inside the toad wouldn't be a good idea unless windows are open a bit.

Need to carry in a ventilated space

S/B placed in a milk crate to hold it upright and in a compartment you wouldn't mind drilling holes in the bottom of compartment
Propane is 'less dense' then air therefore sinks to lowest area----all propane compartments have open or vent bottom areas

Just for clarification
Tanks......Motorhomes/on site locations (ASME/NFPA)
Cylinders......portable vessels (DOT)
*cylinders have to be recertified 10 yrs after mfg. date on collar/5 yrs after that

I carry mine in the back of my F150. The bed has a soft cover so does get some air flow. I use bungee cords to hold in place and secure it to the tie downs in the bed of the truck.

I bought a 5# (1gal) propane tank to travel with. Much easier to find a spot for and easier to take out and use. I fill it whenever we get the coach's built in tank filled and most places will just add the amount used to the bill.
For storage, get a delrin thru-hull fitting at a boat store and a 2 gallon bucket. Drill through the bottom of the bucket and floor of the storage compartment. Use the thru-hull fitting to secure the bucket. Now you have a bottom vented place to store the tank where it cannot move around.

My airtight basement compartment has a water drain plug under the carpet that I remove. A little wedge under the carpet near the drain allows a tunnel to the drain hole. I’ve never had a tank shutoff valve leak. It’s usually from a connection further down that might leak slightly however that almost never happens either.

Not so much about shutoff valve leaking......it's about the pressure increase and Relief Valve opening
Pressure increases from air temps

Thanks. Another good reason not to overfill them. I once had one filled in 40 degree weather and was heading for 90 degree weather and told them to fill it to 70%. The guy was a jerk and said he was filled them to 99% without problems.

Some people think things are okay just because they’ e gotten away with it before.

OPD should shutoff liquid propane going in at 80% Liquid
level.....course the fixed liquid level gauge (bleeder valve) should be cracked open when filling tanks or cylinders
Spews Liquid...STOP filling
**Noticeable change in pump noise when OPD shuts off flow

If attendant doesn't...ask for supervisor
Or better yet.......go elsewhere with your monies after telling supervisor WHY

We've carried a 20#er secured in a strapped down milk crate in our basement for years.
I simply remove the 4" deck plate cover on the basement floor and place the propane tank next to it. If you don't have one any marine hardware store will. Easy installation. Yes, make sure your tank certificate is current and have them filled only by a competent attendant.

The smaller 5# or 10# LP tanks are easier to tote around and give you a lot more choices of storage places. We carried ours in a storage bay.

The 10# tank comes in two styles - the low but fat pancake style or the slim but tall cylinder style. The slimmer cylinder fits more places.

We always carried ours in the back of the Jeep. Took it out as soon as we parked.
