50 Amp Cord Modification
I am thinking about snipping off the 50a cord where it comes out of the coach's box, so I can plug in a surge protector to it there, then put a connector on the 50a cord so I can slip it through hole in the bottom of the compartment. That will solve 2 problems with one fix. 1) Having a surge protector 2) Making it easier to run the cable through the hole by slipping it up thru it rather than down thru it. Has anyone done that?

I installed a portable one in my service bay which required cutting the cord and putting male and female ends back on.

You must of not taken possession of your Coach as of yet.......
Looks like it comes with "Surge Protection" built in.........
Look here New Solei - Itasca by Winnebago, RV, Motorhomes, Campers by Colonial Itasca under "Electrical System"

The only thing about this configuration is it now takes twice as long for the power to come on. The surge delay and the transfer switch delay. Not a problem once you become accustomed to the timing.
Edit... the transfer swith is more expensive than the PI so it is still the sacrificial lamb!

I installed a male connector oout of my transfer switch box, and put a female (AC Stove) socket on the end of my 50' cable. I also have a another of the female sockets that acts like a safe place to have the plug from the transfer switch stay when I'm not using shore power.

I am getting a 2017 model that the dealer is still putting final touches on.
