A question for Great Lakes region members

Hi,

For those who are not full timers or snowbirders when normally is your first trip of spring?

Thanks,

Spring trip

Well we are snow birds now but when we were still working always tried to go during spring break with our kids. Then when went off to college we would go right after spring break.

Depends on the weather. We play it by ear. We've been out as early as mid-April & it was 70-degrees. We've been out as late as mid-May & had snow.

We used to go to what’s now called the Mingo Bay high school baseball tournament in Myrtle Beach, SC during spring break, which was during early to mid-April, and we always either left or returned a week later with snow on the ground. It was also common to deal with lake effect squalls, and snow storms in parts of PA. We’re on Lake Ontario, which says nothing about other Great Lakes areas, of course. But if it was up to us, we’d have waited a few more weeks to get into May. Still no guarantees, but much lower chance of slippery conditions.

Thanks all for posting.

We generally get out on our first trip mid April weather dependant.

If the thaw comes too quick the campsites can be a quagmire though.

It depends on how much snow the Great Lakes deposit on top of my camper!

Try to get out at least by the second week of April.

In Mich, camper breakout is normally Memorial weekend. You can almost guarantee one rainy/cold day that weekend.
April and May can be good camping, just watch the weather and check if the camp ground is even open. Usually the trees will begin budding in early May if that's any help. I've replanted my garden many times due to frost before Memorial Day in Mich.

I hear you on that Davis :-)

I aim for that weekend also WendyJeff, if even only for a 1 or 2 nights close to home as a shakedown.

I have noticed that also Grindstone. We always make memorial a 5 day trip in either west or north Michigan.

Cool Winter camping in Wisconsin

There are local trips and there are national trips. Texas to Arizona is great this time of year. We just got back from three weeks along the Texas Gulf Cost down to South Padre Island.
Locally we go when day time temperatures are above 32 degrees. (My dump valves are exposed.) We greatly enjoy Wyalusing State Park in the winter. There is a pair of eagles that like to soar above the bluffs at the edge of the camp ground. There are unusually 2 or 3 other campers around.
20 degrees below zero -- not so much.

I won't drive the coach if there is a chance of snow or ice on the road.

We are in Iowa, so we are close to the Great Lakes area. We had to plan our local trips around campground openings. That was usually mid to late April for the county and state parks we prefer. If heading south, we could start earlier, maybe mid March.

We leave during mid-April which just happens to coincide with the end of tax season.
