When I did my shop I ran copper. A coworker advised me that compressor oils can degrade PVC. Not sure if that is true.

I used 3/4" black pipe, slight slope across the top and drain valves at each drop, only on 1 wall.

I used RapidAir (1/2") for my 1,500 sq ft shop. It allows for multiple configurations, drops, and outlets inside and outside the shop. I'll never go back to copper or black iron.

rapid air is nice but expensive. for the rigid 100' w/ 3 drops its near 500.00 + shipping. the maxair is about 250.00 for 90' w/ 3 drops. at my local steel yard 1/2 sch 40 is about a buck a ft.

I took the economical route. I have my compressor plumbed into a 100G air storage tank I bought surplus. Mounted above that is a 100' air hose reel with a distribution manifold for those intensive jobs.

My business is run in PVC but we only run at 135 psi for the past 8 years with no issues but it only takes one. That said it will be changed out to Rapid air or equivalent as soon as cash flow allows. I am building a new home shop and garage that I plan to use 1” Rapid air or equivalent. My shop is pretty large at 60’ x 80’ with 18’ ceilings. I plan to have my compressor set at 175 psi.
If you look at most PVC manufacturer websites and on a lot of PVC it states a WP of 350 psi or so depending on schedule and diameter. But it also states not for compressed air or gases. I have recently found this out while researching air lines for my shop and my concern for change at my business. In 1988 I believe OSHA determined it was no longer safe to use PVC for compressed air lines.

What smoe don't realize is a liquid under pressure (eg water) and a gas under pressure (eg air) air two completely different scenarios.
A liquid/water compresses very little so there is not a lot of stored energy, as soon as a pipe break occurs, the pressure imediately drops resulting in a fairly benign event.
While a gas/air compresses a lot and stores much more energy, so when a pipe break occurs it is much more explosive, hence why PVC is not considered a food choice (brittle material that produces sharp shrapnel).
Think of it this way, a 1lb rock (water) drooped from a height of 2ft won't bounce much. A 1lb rubber ball (air) drooped from the same height will bounce much higher because it compresses, stores energy, then bounces back releasing that energy.
The thought that 125psi of water is the same as 125psi of air is a fallacy. Only saying the pressures are equal ignores some important physics that are quit differnt between a non compressable liquid and a compressable gas.

Yes, it is an OSHA violation to use PVC/CVPC for compressed air at any business.
Here is an instance where OSHA find a shop owner $63k for using PVC after a pipe exploded injuring someone.
https://www.osha.gov/news/newsreleases/region4/12272011
Quote:
"One willful violation with a penalty of $63,000 has been cited for using PVC piping to transport compressed air. A willful violation is one committed with intentional knowing or voluntary disregard for the law's requirements, or with plain indifference to worker safety and health."

When I built my home, I put copper lines into the 3 1/2 car garage.
Then decided to build a pole barn for storage / shop.
Never used the air lines in the garage.
I use a 100 ft. retractable air line in the barn. The compressor is in the storage area and the line goes through the wall so I don't have to listen to the compressor when in the shop side.
