AM/FM Antenna

So we have a really long (about 2') silver antenna on top of our RV that really makes it difficult to put a cover on it. Today it was really windy outside and the antenna actually went through the cover. The base of the antenna looks like it's coming up from the bending.

1) is this the am/fm antenna?
2) can we just remove it and seal over the hole with lap sealant? Other ideas?
3) any good short antennas to replace it with and how difficult is it? I'm assuming ther is a cord running inside.

Thanks

Yes. Mine has a place to loosen a screw and lay flat. But I don't cover it.

I don't think I've ever seen a camper with long silver antennas. Did you buy it used? Maybe the last owner was a Ham if that's the case.
Yes you can remove them. If the hole is large put some sort of metal plate over it and then dicor or eternabond.

Assuming it's FM

Most of those antennas unscrew from the base. When I was using a cover years ago, I would unscrew the two antennas on the roof of my coach and layed them there. I had two tennis balls with a slot cut in each. Once I removed the antenna, I would slip the tennis balls over the protruding mounts to protect the cover.

Second thought....if you can identify the spot where the antenna hits the material, you can get a brass two piece grommet (hardware store) and insert it into the cover to keep it from tearing. It will be more work, but you can slip the cover over the antenna, leaving it in place.

That is more likely an antenna for a CB, but it could be an am/fm if it dates from the 1990's. By the early 2000's, most broadcast (receive only) radios were using the smaller shark fin types or had an antenna wire strung inside the body somewhere.

In any case, if you don't need it, sure you can remove it.

About 12-24" long, screw in the ball section is the AM/FM antenna used til around 2012. That's way to short for a CB/Ham/Short wave
