OK...here's my solution. Don't use this. Period.
While some thinks it's cool, neat & modern. I don't. Privacy is a gift, don't give it away.

Boy, do I agree!
Should be a no brainer, a person that uses Ring, Alexa, Google, Amazon, Siri, Apple, Onstar, etc,,, should realize there's a decent chance their privacy is being invaded. Whether it be the company itself or a hacker, these devices definitely up the odds you're gonna have personal info stolen.

Even your printer can be sharing/making your info available in more ways than most realize. Found it a bit put-offish when a tech helping with a printer update read my WiFi password that the printer was using back to me from his screen to ensure that it was correct. How many hackers now know how to read that information from the name brand printers.
My brother was at a Security Conference and sent a bunch of folks near him in dark suits scampering when all he said was how could they expect high levels of security when most devices now have chips in them made in factories managed by Governments not particularly friendly to the US? Even Motorola Communications and the IBM PC/Tablet divisions are now owned and operated by the Chinese Government with Motorola being one of the backbones of Police, Emergency, Military and Civil Defense Communications for Generations.
Its also been widely noted how much spam folks have been getting related to conversations had in homes where these Alexa type devices are active.
Even Cable TV Set Top Boxes for years now have been able to monitor conversations and detect mood from the volume, speed and tone of conversations it picks up to better target advertising to fit the situation or better meter how the program being viewed is or isn't being appreciated even if your not participating in a Television Ratings study. Some can even detect how many people are in the room along with age and gender based on what the set top box picks up.
Some would also be surprised at how many conversations in your neighborhood are being picked up and monitored by these Ring type WiFi enabled/connected cameras and doorbells even from across the street or a few doors down. It goes far beyond just your neighbor accidentally picking up what was coming from your baby monitor now.
Brings to mind the old Mel Brooks Get Smart TV Show with Don Adams and Ed Platt with the Cone of Silence and makes you wonder if eventually one will be needed in order to have a private conversation. Wonder if Larabee will still be needed to assist.

Hello?
People could use YOUR wifi to facilitate THEIR SICK activities. Porn. Pedophilia. Blackmail. Hacking into YOUR computer.
There is nothing good that could come of letting strangers into your network. If you think its ok you might as well leave your door wide open and the keys in your car. Oh put that credit card out on the table too while you are at it.......

Would the government or those who should never have access to this information be using this to track individuals?

I would belive amazon has a very good track record for security. As a leader in hosted cloud computer outsourcing.
As far as security, most of us have already given up most our security to all the no name app companies that we have given access to our photos, memory, data, phones, etc....
As far as bandwidth. Most of us will never notice it, unless we have usage application.

My opinion is that something like what Amazon is doing is inevitable and even desirable, but not yet.
