Hello Jay! It's really not a lot of toll roads for a state that if only 1 toll road went from Miami to Pensacola would be 674 miles. And yes the tolls are not exorbitant compared to many NE states tolls.
Plus one link described the Orlando area is having the highest concentration of toll roads and toll plazas. That's to suck the blood of all those that want to visit the attractions in Orlando...sounds good to me....

I think that’s why we paid a lot in tolls. 4 axles. I don’t understand the poster who lives in Bradenton saying there aren’t tolls there. Certainly are if you’re coming from St. Pete on Pinellas, and the Selmon I-4 connector. We hit tolls in Orlando because we stopped to visit friends of SR417, I think. I suppose we really should get a better nav system that can steer us away from toll roads, so, we’re partly to blame. Anyway, I’m old enough that I had nothing better to complain about this week. And I don’t mind our North Carolina state income tax. We pay less in sales tax, and income tax is a small price to pay for a better quality of life, especially if most of your income is not subject to tax. I also like that we haven’t pulled away the welcome mat to out-of-staters.

We love Florida and North Carolina. This thread had me laughing. The OP was half being funny too if you read it closely. I like the toll by plate and the transponder convenience, but yes, we've been a little surprised from time to time too. The convenience charges add up. I imagine the OP agrees that the entry costs and costs to own and operate these monsters is pretty high, so tolls aren't much compared to the overall costs. But I too get a little caught off guard from time to time. For me it is about the timing/mood of when I open the envelope or see the credit card charge as to whether I decide to vent on this forum. Please continue to keep the welcome mats open for both states for me and my family. We love both!!!!

Perhaps President Obama was right when he suggested making interstates into toll roads.

Yes thegats1,
Glad that you caught that I bore facetious intent. Florida is a wonderful place to visit. I knew that I would get skewered by some. It’s the cost of levity.

I've been a Florida resident since 1977 and have a SunPass transponder for each of our two vehicles. The only I4 tolls I'm aware of are the Orlando area Express Lanes. If you also drove some on 417, then you picked up some tolls there as well. If you don't have Sunpass, the toll-by-plate rates are higher. And towing a trailer or a car also bumps it up considerably.
I4 FAQ:
I-4 in Florida has tolls—but only in the 21-mile stretch of I-4 Express lanes starting west of Kirkman Road in Orlando and ending east of State Road 434 in Longwood.

All the arguments are wasted. The gas tax built and maintained most US roads. That will stop gradually as electric cars take over the roads. So maybe in 5 years gas tax revenue will be so low as to not make a difference.
What will replace it? Politics will tell. Politicians will be scrambling to figure how to charge drivers who probably don't vote for them. In some places with obstructive politicians, road will go to ruin before anything is done.
You can pretend it is never going to happen, but there is no escaping what is coming. Maybe privatize roads.

Stay in North Carolina.
Hey, If you don`t like Florida roads , you can always just stay in Asheville, N.C. and enjoy the never ending construction on I-26 thru town. Stay safe.

Many states are raising vehicle registration fees on EVs to make up for the loss of fuel tax revenue.

Tolls are significantly cheaper with a transponder, maybe 60% of toll by plate and no convenience fees. A SunPass transponder that will also work in all EZ Pass states costs about $20. There are no monthly fees whether you use the account or not. Just attach a credit or debit card to the account for automatic replenishment and it's all pretty easy. Bonus, at least in FLA, you don't need a transponder in each vehicle as long as they are registered in your account. They will get the tag number and ding your balance at the cheaper rate.

that’s like complaining about loosing a $10 fishing lure when you are paying about $400/trip to go fishing (add up depreciation, maintenance, storage, gas, ice, beer…….)
I’m not gonna quit fishing cause I loose a few $10 lure's

Our bill was over a hundted this year. But we have 2 rigs, one pulling a car, 2nd is p/u pulling a 5er. And family visiting us.
Now taking toll road saves bunches of time and fuel. Far less traffic.
FL is now the most conjusted state but has the best winter weather.
Suck it up.

Anything Florida might charge you to go visit pales in comparison to a SINGLE trip across the GWB in NYC to Long Beach. How's $105 sound for a one way drive?
Going back out was only $33.

I avoid Florida for reasons some avoid other places - something unappealing gives me pause.
