We take a little different approach. We make our travel plans a year in advance. We like to attend big events. We like going to places where people are having a good time. That means you need advanced reservations or sometimes you won't get a site. By making advanced reservations you can also get better sites. Some popular locations like San Diego are difficult unless you reserve months in advance. We also make at least one international vacation each year. So for us planning ahead is essential. However, when we are traveling across country to an event we use Passport America for over night stops as we don't like parking in Walmarts or truck stops. I'd rather pay a few dollars for a quiet night. Never have a problem with over night stops but we always call in advance when we know where we want to stay. That way we can make alternate plans in case they are full.
