Are "adjustable" water pressure regulators necessary

I know we all need to have a water pressure regulator to protect our RV water system, but I am curious why we need to have an adjustable one. The reason for these regulators is to reduce the amount of water pressure coming into the camper. The max water pressure I want coming into my camper is 50-55 psi, so I have a non-adjustable regulator set for that pressure, and from what I have seen there are other different pressured non-adjustable regulators if someone wanted a different pressure. If all I want is this pressure, what would be the benefit of an adjustable regulator? Some may say how do you know that you are actually getting the 50-55psi with a non-adjustable regulator. Well, you got me there, but other than that, what's the benefit/reason for adjustable pressure regulator.
Thanks

No it does not to be adjustable if it is good quality. Just a personal preference.

The advantage of an adjustable one is that the next guy that finds it after you leave it behind gets a more expensive regulator.

Seriously I always had the non-adjustable ones for years but a few years a go I bought an adjustable. I have never had to adjust it after the first time. Have to be more careful not to break it too. Not sure it's really necessary, I think I would have been fine with a non-adjustable. That's my .02 anyway.

danrn-

I used two regulators:

1) An adjustable on the water spigot, and
2) A fixed (nominal 55 psi, "full-flow") for the coach

I set the water spigot regulator to 60-65 psi. That allowed a bit of pressure drop through the coarse sediment filter and the water softener. The outlet from the softener fed the fixed regulator, and from there passed through a second sediment filter and a carbon filter.

I could have used a fixed regulator on the spigot, if I had found one with that pressure and something close to "full flow." Maybe I missed one with those specs when I looked at them.

I wintered in a park with water pressure around 100 psi, sometimes more. I put a regulator on the spigot after a hose failed. Also, the water was high in solids, hence the water softener.

I don't think there is an actual NEED for an adjustable version. I think the quality of the regulator is the important issue. Some of the low end models, of either type can cause pressure issues, usually lack of pressure.

I carry a good non-adjustable regulator, but rarely use it. I normally use my tank and water pump, even if on full hookup. Just nice to shut pump off, when away from my RV, and always know if a leak has happened.

I had an adjustable one cause it was rebuildable

But after a year of using it I swapped to No Regulator......I exclusively went to using the fresh water tank & pump
*consistent pressure & flow regardless of where we camped
*simple flip of the switch and pump was off when we went to bed/left the RV
*pump 'burrruuuupped' then there was a leak some where. Find it/Fix it

Adjustable for sure. If the preset regulators were set at a higher pressure, then I’d say no. But I like looking at my gauge and adjusting if need be, but having to adjust higher is rare.

We went through a couple of the adjustable regulators.
Now we just use the simple full flow regulator - the 2 adjustable models we had didn’t allow as much flow as the simple full flow model.
For us, trying to find ways to make life simpler so we can spend more time doing the things we really like (adjusting regulators is not on my list of things I like to do).

That reminds me of me. After "losing" two adjustable regulators, I switched to the non-adjustable ones.

I also run off of my internal tanks to get consistent pressure and flow no matter where I am.

Have had both types. Started with a Camco non adjustable, and switched to one by Valterra, which delivered safe but higher pressure. Tried an adjustable one, which broke after 3 months of minimal use and the manufacturer wanted me to jump thru hoops to get it replaced. Have stayed with the Valterra ever since.

Most of the nonadjustables I've found are at 45 psi. I use the adjustables now with a nonadjustable backup. I have a water pressure gauge that I use to see if I even need a water pressure reducer and to initially adjust the adjustable, i.e., if the water pressure is 70 psi, I adjust down to 55 psi.

I used to use an adjustable till it broke. I now use as preset. So much easier. Less bulk as well.

Adjustable pressure regulators are sensitive when you have occasional dips below freezing.

Had several 'break' when a night predicted for 35 degrees dropped to 30.

Also, they came be broken by barely freezing temps while stored in the underbelly or on the spigot with no watter running through them.

They don't drain well when freezing temps are likely. They really should be stored in a heated space after being drained when freezing temps are expected.

We use an adjustable. I adjusted ours until we observed a good flow thru our faucets and shower head. It also compensates for the pressure drop thru our water filter. Its been set at 55 or so psi for the last three years with no problems.

Safe travels and all the best.
