Yes, there's a difference between using a debit card as a credit transaction and putting in your PIN. I always opt to use my PIN because I know it will save the merchant a few pennies.

There's also been a couple of comments about using cash. I can foresee a day when even cash will have an extra charge. Why? There are costs associated with processing cash, particularly large amounts it. There's the cost of time spent counting, securing and transporting it to a bank. Then there's the bank's time spent counting and securing it along with exchanging sums with the reserve bank. With an electronic transaction a lot of that goes away. However, with banks charging 1-4% of a transaction, it currently costs more than all the processing of cash. Change that and you might see a difference.

Loves truck stops

My experience

Only comercial companies cards are accepted at the truck lanes pumps.

My wife goes in and pre pays cash or with a Debit card.

After filling she gets change or a credit is issued on the card.

We have found loves in the midwest to be clean and easy in and out to pay and manuver our rig.

Most are smaller than Pilot Fj's

i use the square app for cards. i pay a charge for all debit and credit cards i accept as payment. between 2.75 add 3.75 percent. i just add it into the cost of labor so it doesnt show up as an extra charge. many vendors do this.

i offer a discount for real cash.

Same with me (square) except I tell all my customers up front. Price change for Charge, Check and Cash.

So my card fee is a line item on the invoice.

My customers seem to like it to be itemized and that I am not "hiding it"

Not that I am accusing you of hiding it. It is actually rolled in with other charges in "cost of doing business" But they appreciate being shown that there is a charge for using a card and I am up front about it. Many will come with cash the next time around.

Keeping in mind I live and work in a Rural community with ranchers, construction workers and other hands on type people.
