Union organizers blame Wal-Mart, RV park owners blame Wal-Mart, some small businesses blame Wal-Mart, some city councils say Wal-Marts will cause the destruction of their community. I wonder why the Wal-Mart parking lot is so full if they are that bad. My rant.

a couple of interesting posts from a couple of guys who are reasonable new here: Burro and PaulTenFour.

Burro,
with that setup of yours, and being able to avoid commercial parks, have you ever stopped at a WalMart for a quick stop before?
And i sure would be interested in hearing more about your solar/batteries setup. Start a thread sometime in the tech areas here about that setup. Good stuff!

PaulTenFour,
Bingo on that ! And i am a small business owner with 40 employees and i can directly feel the heat of what happens when the superstore mentality moves into town. ouch.
But even though i am directly effected by one of the biggest of those (not WalMart), I personally feel that business competition usually finds its own correct path and i do NOT oppose it. The Enron type situations being the exception to that rule.

FatDog-We've been full-timing for six years. In that time, I guess we've overnighted at Wally World once or twice a year...too much light and far too noisy. Several times bad weather forced a stop. We travel with an eye to finding a suitable boondocking spot before dark.

Hubby and I set up the solar array ourselves. (Yep. "Burro" is a gal!) We love it and if we ever get another sticks-and-bricks house, it'll sure have solar!

We have stayed twice at Wal Mart. I don't like it too noisy and too much light. We have stayed at state rest stops twice and like them much more. We had security and not as noisy. We perfer a campground.

PaulTenFour,
Because we have been taught to be consumers and I'm not pointing any fingers because I love to shop. But I have now more junk in my house than I know what to do with. We have more disposable income (although that's changing), more credit than we know what to do with so we buy stuff. After all that's what they tell us do on TV. People have so much junk that they can't fit in their houses, they need to rent storage areas. There is something wrong with this picture and somebody (not me) is getting rich.

...but I read in the news that there are people hitting other folks in the head with baseball bats in your North Carolina state rest stops.

My wife and I have had our motor home for a little over a year and have not yet stayed at a Walmart, but came close a few times, both were because, although we did not have a reservation, we weren't sure how far down the road we would be. We might have stayed at any of several campgrounds, but they couldn't be bothered to answer their phones. we tow a car on a dolley and would prefer to have a pull through uf possible and wo call ahead. But we can't stop if we can't get ahold of anyone. So we continue on down the road to find one that will. It does irritate me to have to pay $25 + to pull in at 8 pm and hook up to electric only and leave at 8am and don't want or need to dump or even hook up to water. Had there been a Walmart close I would have pulled in. If the camp ground owners want to fill their spots I woud suggest that they offer some incentives to people like us who don't want pools or video rooms,or miniture golf, we want a spot for the night and nothing else. Time to stem off my soap box.

There is an easy answer to this. All they (the CG owners)have to do it put us in an overflow area and charge us ten bucks. Hey it costs nine bucks for a shower in a truck stop nowadays y'know

I have not heard of anybody being hit in the head at a NC rest stop. I never stayed at one too close to home. I know they do have 24 hour security.
I have only stayed at the Florida welcome center and on in New York both had security and I got a good nights sleep.
Two stays at Wal mart too noisy for me and Dianne

I haven't seen any news regarding this

If this is factual, please tell us when it happened, what newspaper reported it, and how many times is it supposed to have occurred? I phoned the local NC Highway Patrol and they said they haven't heard of any instances of such issues at our rest areas.

A couple of days ago, there was a report on our local TV station of an attack at a rest area either in North or South Carolina, I believe. They showed a surveillance camer of an individual holding a bat behind his back while talking to another guy. Then he started hitting him with it. I think it was sometime after that that the guy was found by others coming into the rest area. I'm sorry I dont remember where it actually happened. But I would of course consider this an isolated instance and that it could happen anywhere.
