Automated Trucking

We watched 60 Minutes last night. They did a segment on automated trucks. If autonomous trucking becomes a reality, truck drivers will lose their jobs. They claim that’s 300,000 jobs. That will hurt a lot of people.

Looking on the bright side, truck stop parking lots will be empty. Thus allowing us RVers another overnight option.

Keep in mind this will not happen overnight. The big companies with deep pockets will be the first ones in, but you can bet they'll roll it out gradually. Buy a few, use them on select routes, be prepared for technological snafus, retain backup capability.

Technology advancement is nothing new. And the labor force is well employed.
Don't sweat what's not a long term issue.
People will find good employment when they want to work (for the most part).

It's half full.

There is a huge shortage of younger truckers. Average age today is something like mid to late 50s. And most have health issues (overweight, diabetic, etc. ) that will force them to retire as soon as they can apply for Medicare and social security. The younger generations are not interested in this type of job, even though it pays pretty good ($50k or more).

The shortage is the major risk all trucking companies are facing. Automation is being driven by the lack of skilled labor. It won't reduce the headcount.

Have to agree with DRM 901.
It's a tough job with little thanks.
When I was truckin back in the 70s it was low pay, long hours and the dispatcher making impossible demands. Shippers and receivers were another issue. You should have been here yesterday. Now you'll have to wait until .....?
Today we have a lot of guys who can hold the steering wheel but have little knowledge of the industry.
For sure we have many very skilled drivers out there and they do a great job.

The industry had a lot of guys eager to get into driving back in the 70s through to the 90s and it responded by paying low wages and long hours. Now those guys are moving on to retirement or in my case to other employment and another trade.

Today truckers can make some good money but it is too little too late and thus the reason to the robo truck. The cost of freight today is rising and this is but one reason.
Thank goodness for the trucker. I salute you.

How will they refuel? I know at some point in the future there will be automatic fueling but that technology is not available now, is it?

Autonomous vehicles still need a body to take over if needed. Maybe in 20 years....

Every major trucking company is begging for drivers. It's supply and demand, the way to hire more drivers is increase pay and benefits.
The biggest mistake this country ever made was to eliminate moving goods by rail and put all their eggs in the long-haul trucking method.
There is a utube channel by a long-haul trucker showing him pacing a semi-autonomous semi-truck. It was running a steady 70MPH with a woman in the driver seat. There are many on the highways now.

A ND farm we work on during harvest time has auto-steer combines and tractors. The operator just sits in the cab to monitor numerous computer screens. Autonomous trucks are only a baby step away.

That body could be a thousand miles away in a control room, much like drone operators are today.

Trucking is hours of shear, mind dulling boredom, followed by seconds of shear terror. Boredom is great!
