AZ registration is a rip-off

Boy was I surprised when I registered my RV in AZ after moving here from Calif.

2014 Phaeton was $1200.00 for 2017 registration.
AZ charged me$2970.00 for 2018 registration.

This is how they calculate it. It is all based on the MSRP (NOT what you paid...but the window sticker base price). My rig had a $256K base price before options)

Regardless if you are the second or third owner, they still start with that Base MSRP and the registration drops 16% per year.

On top of that, they use NADA data base to look up the price. The orig registration fee was $$3300 based on a $320K base price (which was wrong). But I went back with a copy of my build sheet which showed the actual $256K base price and got a $350 refund.

I had thought that folks said AZ was cheaper for vehicle registration, but not from what I see.

Has anyone found a way to get a reasonable fee for the registration?

Thanks,
Dan

To get a reasonable fee you will need to move to a different state and comply with their taxation laws

WA uses a private "valuation" service that seems to always be higher than what was paid. Luckily they accepted the dealers paperwork since we only pay on the difference when trading vehicles. Use tax was over $25,000 on the Magna but the yearly license fee is about $131. Oh yes, no income tax (yet, but one party now has a majority all the way through so we'll probably get one in the future)

One way or another, States will get their money. Real Estate Taxes are comparatively low in AZ and so is the State Income Tax compared to CA. Yes, vehicle registration is expensive but in the end, AZ is still way cheaper than CA.
Welcome to Arizona:-)

Yup... Our License is around $350 (for 2 years, depends on length & weight I think)
We do not have a sales tax in Oregon...as you said...Yet.. have the same tax influence forces from immigrants from a southern neighbor state.

I don't see how you folks stand it. TN registration is $26.50 regardless of value or weight, state income tax is $0, state sales tax is 7% and decreases as the purchase price goes up. My property tax on a lake front 3 bed 2 bath 2,500 sq ft house on one acre in a suburb of Nashville is $600/year.

Wow I may have to take a look at TN. I currently use an Escapees address in SD that saved me thousands over CA. No income tax, 4% sales/excise tax and low registration and insurance costs.

That works if you're full timing and use SD as your home, but if your residence is not in SD you may be committing tax fraud. That happens with MT LLC's too.

Florida is $35 /year.

No income tax, 6% sales tax.

You could try moving here, but just checked and we're full.

Welcome to Arizona. Yes, we do know how it works. The registration fee....is what it is. Doubtful it will greatly impact your lifestyle. No point in complaining about it. Pay up like the rest of us do. There is no way to get a "reasonable fee". At the end of the day you will most likely find most things are far less expensive in Arizona vs California. Move on. Enjoy your new surroundings.

Something is not right on the Florida fee. I pay $ 101 for my 6500# F250. Have to go out to get rv registration. It's always a bit mysterious but I think there is the registration fee + some sort of tax which shows up as one non itemized amount on renewal. $225 first time plate fee by the way.

dpinvidic,
Well Sir, there's a couple of things here. First, many of us "X" Californian's know how to get around some of CAs registration fees. I won't go into it now. I will simply say that, based on what's "REPORTED" to the DMV clerk that a price was paid for a vehicle, the clerk then calculates used car tax and registration fees. And, CA loses a ton of money based on how certain things are done.

But, Arizona doesn't use what's REPORTED to the MVD clerk. As you've found out, they use a more conventional way in that, there's no way around it. By the way, I'm linking the AZ MVD calculator explanation sheet, just in case you're interested. They only use the MSRP or, the "Manufacturers Base Retail Price" as a starting point. Then, they automatically subtract, 60% of that figure to get a starting point for their calculations.

So, in your case, you say your coach had/has an MSRP of $256,000., correct?

$256,000 x 60% = $153,600.00

Then, they assess the present value using two different values. For the first year, it's considered a new vehicle. And being so, it's assessed at $2.80 per $100 of value. Or, easier said, $28.00 per thousand.

So, you take your reduced MSRP of $153,600. and multiply it by $28.00. ($28.00 per $1000 is easier to calculate than the $2.80 per $100) You now get the first years registration fee of, $4,300.

Now, for every year after that, it drops by 16.25%, not 16%. And, the "assessed" value changes from $2.80 per $100 to, $2.89 per $100 for used vehicles. So, for the second year on your coach, it works out like this:

$153,600 x 16.25% = $24,960. So, subtract $24,960 from the $153,600 and you get $128,640. Now, apply the assessed value rate of, $28.90 per 1000 and you get, the second year registration fee of $3,717.

The third years registration goes like this:
$128,640 x 16.25% = $20,904. $128,640 - $20,904. = $107,736.

$107,736 x $28.90 (used vehicle assessed value rate) and you get, $3,113 for that years registration fee.

You can see it drop a few hundred dollars per year. My figures are close but, the AZ MVD has small add-ons etc. that will change my figures a small amount.

So, just in case you're interested, here's the link:

https://www.azdot.gov/media/blog/pos...es-calculated-

Scott

P.S. By the way, we too were a bit "shocked" when we moved to AZ and went to the "MVD" (that's AZs designation for CAs "DMV". At that time, approximately 3.5 years ago, our registration was due in CA but, we moved so, we paid the AZ one. In CA, it was going to be $375. But, for AZ, it was $625. Our coach is an '04 Itasca Horizon 36GD with the C-7 330HP CAT. It's MSRP was $214,000. Our '11 GMC truck was considerably higher in fees, as well as our '08 Honda GL 1800 Goldwing. So, we got bit for our first years registration of all our vehicles in AZ.

But, we have one thing over here in Lake Havasu City, Mohave County, we have NO SMOG LAWS. In other words, there is no annual smog check for any vehicle. No smog certificate needed upon vehicle transfer. We can put any engine we want, in any vehicle and there's no issue. I consider the lack of annual smog certs and checks to be sort of a checks and balances thing against the higher fees.
Scott

X2

Adding to that low property taxes with the homestead exemption. And "some" of the best smooth roads.
