I seem to remember a long while back an elderly RV couple went missing.

Their bodies, if I remember correctly, were found in shallow graves on a beach near Corpus Christi.

The killers were eventually captured in Mexico, a younger man and woman.

This thread makes me wonder if the murdered couple let them in to go to the bathroom, give them food, or otherwise help out a couple in seeming need.

After all that would be the right thing, the decent thing, the human thing to do when others are in need, wouldn't it?

As some above have mentioned the probability of a bad outcome is unlikely or a small risk compared to the benefit of helping others.

Now I don't know the facts of the case but for the elderly couple the risk of a bad outcome was 100% likely, 100% probable and resulted in them losing the few years of life they had left.

So, if someone knocks on your door and asks to use your bathroom it's your choice and good on you if you do. I won't call you stupid or naive.

If you tell them to go use a bush or tree it's your choice also and I won't condemn you as being inhuman or cruel.

This thread asked a simple question that could easily be answered by a yes or no poll.

What has been made abundantly clear, is that regardless of giving a yes or no answer, there is overwhelming willingness to judge or condemn those who disagree with the opposing answer.

Maybe that human condition, the unwillingness to accept an opposing response or view, deserves more thought and energy.

A sad fact that we face now is the change in social acceptance of other people. What we did 20 or 40 years back is totally different than now. Years ago, we thought nothing of stopping to help another RVer on the side of the road. Now you may become the target of a mugger, carjacker or simply a rea nut job.

I will pull over a distance away and ask if they have a cell phone to call for assistance and will call 911 if they need help. But things are so different now. You have to do what you feel safe doing so you cannot judge others. They have to make their own decisions.

I like your line of thought Sherpa.

It is, however, noticeably different the way people respond to others online vs in person. I find that difference also a bit fascinating.

Different situation and 48 year old Navy veteran and his 46 year old wife are not elderly.

This topic was about a gridlocked highway not a couple young full timers who camping on a beach. A very tragic situation but not even close to what the original topic was about.

It still points out that bad things can happen on the road and we shouldn't be trying to shame people who choose to remain safe.

Tell them it's broken, end of conversation.
I can't even fathom the gall some people have.
Fortunately, I live three hours from the nearest Interstate.

exactly.we're talking about a gridlocked freeway. the odds of being robbed, murdered and carjacked are astronomically small.

Regardless of the odds, if it's only 1 in a hundred would you say yes? In these wildly wierdly times I wouldn't count on support from bystanders if things went sour and by that time the damage would be done.

I've stood in line to use a bathroom here and there through 60 years and have noted a lack of violent acts and robberies each and every time, so far.
Where do you people live that has made you so afraid of your fellow Americans, good grief.

I would say yes, because not only are you hydrated, you now have an empty bottle.

Edited

People get killed for no reason lately. Kids in school, parents going to the grocery store, daycare centers. Many of them won’t get to stand in line to use the bathroom for the next 60 yrs.
If you want to let anyone use your restroom, that’s fine. But don’t go getting all upset for those that have a different POV from yours.

This thread has ran its course
