We had a similar problem this winter. It was a faulty alternator causing the main engine battery to discharge while we were driving. We watched the voltage dropping on the guage until it went below 10 volts and killed the engine. We started the generator, although starting the generator does not charge the engine batteries as it only has a trickle charger from the house to the engine batteries. As stated earlier, a jumper cable from the house batteries to the engine batteries got us into a campsite so we could access the situation. A voltage test at the alternator with the engine running, revealed no voltage coming out of the alternator. We installed a new alternator and all was well. Cheers
