As far as I can tell there are zero reasons to ever do business with someone who cold calls you. There are a lot of reasons no to. If they're at my door, phoning me, or approaching me when I'm out I just simply refuse to do any business with them. If they've, as in your case, made me concerned about something I will go to a competitor for a second opinion.

Incredible story, thanks for the heads up. I'm a fairly savvy mechanic but you just never know when a scammer will catch you at an off moment.

You gave me lots to think about.

BEWARE--Beaver UT I-15 Flying J Truck Stop/Sportys To Go Tire/Auto Center

I will never trust anyone that comes up to me and tells me I need to give him $4,400 without getting a 2nd, 3rd or even 4th opinion. Don't care who it is!!

But, thanks VERY much for the heads up!!

Sorry you had to go through this and I'm sure others have suffered the same fate.

I learned years ago to not listen to anything a tire store employee suggests.

When I go get tires I tell them exactly what brand and size I want and what pressure I want them aired to. Then I take it home and double check the pressure. I guess it comes from all of the years of doing my own mechanic and fabrication work, but I do not trust many people in general any more. Too many lowlifes have spent their lives perfecting the profession of scamming honest, hard working people .

Got hit by a scam like this in Wells, NV. Fueling up and a guy walked out of a tire shop, looked at my tires and said they were *running hot* and I should bring the TT over the shop after I gas up. Got my fuel, pulled out on the street, gave him a big honk. He showed me my IQ with his middle finger.

After all, you now had to install 6 new (correct) tires, right?
That is the problem with these highway ripoffs against people with out of state license plates. They know people will not come back for court hearings, maybe several with continuances. If a person did win, how do you collect? I have won a few small claims courts suits and have never collected a dime.

This hardly seems like a good reason to dis the whole state.

Maybe I was wrong. According to this article, the owner was the mayor and the Utah dept of transportation and this outfit were in a partnership to list this as a rest stop. Sad situation.

But I still think it is beautiful out there and I will go back albeit with a better since of awareness.

I live about an hour north of there and have heard of this sort of think happening there. Can't believe they are still allowed to operate.

Send a letter to Flying J corporate office.
As a high school kid I worked at a Standard gas station (in Utah no less). The older guys that worked there did nothing but sell tires. I could only pump gas (thank goodness). Someone wrote the corporate office and 4 guys came out to talk to all that were selling tires. Needless to say, the owner was put on notice if there was another report, they would pull his station. Stay inform and thanks for the heads up. We are planing a trip here shortly to UT to visit friends. Might stop by that Flying J and see what happens.....

And then you miss Arches, Zion, Canyonlands, Bryce, Capital Reef, some of the best skiing in the US, Bonneville Salt Flats, and other gorgeous places beyond counting. Your choice.

So if you let some low life sell you something you don't need it's the low life's fault?
