Bugging Out?

As a NBF (Natural Born Floridian) I don't scare easily when a hurricane blows through; that said, I now live less than a mile away from the Atlantic in Daytona Beach. We will be moving to my ancestral home, which is high ground for Florida. There we will stick it out in the RV, enough food, water, electricity, for most of a week.

How many others are planning similar vacations over the next ten days? Or, are you just going to due the smart thing and bug out.

I'd be far away from there given the predicted winds. That is unless I had elevated underground parking. Hard to do in Florida.

MH is filled with food, gas and water, waste tank emptied. If a cat 2/3 we will stay put in the house. Cat 4 we are out of here.

Went thru Andrew in 1992 and lost house in South Dade. Cop at the time, and worked 12 hours/7 days a week for three months.
Thankfully retired now and living in Va. mountains.
If I was still in Fla, a cat 3 or more would find me outta there. Would be heading north as far away as I could get. No rv is going to withstand a cat 3.
Why risk it to play macho man?
Silly to risk you and your family just to stay in house during storm like that. What are you going to be able to do if your stuck there and it hits...nothing!!!

As I said, we will be going back to my ancestral home. The family has been there for over 140 years. My home growing up, has solid poured 8" exterior walls. And double hurricane straps on every truss. We were raised prepared. I bring the RV to put it on high ground and have limited utilities. We have portable generators beyond the one on the RV and a hand pump for the water well. The RV will be parked on the Leeward side of the house. If my father's house floods, about 75 to 80% of Florida will be under water. A true NBF bis ready; not because we are smarter, because we have the experience.

I think he is saying if they flood, that much of Florida would also flood.

I'm 24 feet above sea level there would be a lot of our area flooded to get my feet wet

You might want to rethink your plan. High ground will not protect you from the predicted high winds and associated flying debris.
The latest forecast from the NOAA hurricane center shows Irma running right up the center of Florida.
Atlanta International Speedway has opened the field for camping. Our friends from Hilton Head report that most campgrounds outside the predicted path are already full.

If I was living in Florida and a Cat 2 or greater was headed my way I'd probably be in northern Mississippi by now or at least on the road headed that way. Been thru a couple of hurricanes living in coastal southeastern Virginia and between mid August and early October the coach is on a 1 hour ready for departure state. High water isn't a high concern at the homestead but wind blown missiles and falling trees are. And yes I'm watching the track. Might need to hit the road next week and head west for a couple of days.

If it was me in a RV I'd be going to the Grand Ole Opry for a while.

We went to storage at 8:30 this evening, brought the TT home and loaded it. Will head out early morning, taking back roads to avoid the jammed interstates.
