Bumper mounted trailer
Somewhere on one of the RV forums, I've come across details on a single or two wheel trailer that mounted on the rear bumper, thereby making it a part of the unit, rather than a separate vehicle. Seems to me like this would be an excellent method of carrying a generator etc., w/o putting extra stress on the 5er frame. Anyone seen this?

Forgive me? I'm not quite sure what your referencing.
A single AXLE or single wheel trailer with two wheels, or a two AXLE trailer?
Mounted on which bumper the TV or the 5er?
ORV has a tow hitch rack on their new Back Wood suite, to house a generator if that's what you saw.

That's it!
I mounted a Honda RV generator, gas tank, small grill, leveling block storage etc, on a carrier that came mounted on my last 5er. It was built super heavy, and plug welded to the trailer frame. Several local trips, it performed very well, and didn't seem to be affecting either handling or structural integrity of the trailer frame, however during a round trip to the mid-west, experiencing some terrible, pot holed roads on the interstates, it began to tilt. Now own a larger, better built 5er, and still want to use the Honda. Don't think I want to try the frame extension thing again, and looks like this might be a good idea.
As far as legality in all states, I don't think this would be considered a trailer, as there is no hitch connection per se. of course you could run into an old red-neck leo - -

DrDarrin, is that safe? Lots of weight on that little tire.

I have no first hand knowledge whether it is or not. But I have seen other travelers with them with Goldwings on them and they seem to love them. I have chatted with a few.
I'm thinking it would be a great way to carry somethings and shift weight from the front to the rear of the 5er. Does anyone ever have enough room for everything they want to carry?

I have two friends with 5th wheel trailers that have FRAME (not bumper) mounted trailers. They mount at 2 points (each frame rail) and don't pivot left-right only up and down. They ride on a pivoting set of wheels, although the pivoting method is different for each. One friend has his golf cart on the trailer and the other has a Smart Car on it. I believe they are legal everywhere because they don't pivot like triple towing. Be warned though, because the trailer does not pivot, they have a very wide turn radius. We tested the turn radius of the 40 foot Excel with the Smart Car trailer in an empty parking lot. The 5th wheel followed the truck well by only going over the parking space lines by about a foot. On the other hand, the Smart Car trailer kept swinging over an additional car space, maybe 10 more feet!

My brother looked into one of those a few years back to carry a jetski behind his boat; in California, it is considered a separate trailer. Therefore it must be licensed and if attached to the rear of another trailer, is treated as a triple (double tow). And while the manufacturer "doesn't consider it a trailer, but rather an extension", even they admit that individual states may look at it differently. So what the manufacturer claims is irrelevant, check with state law for the truth.
