C.A.R.B reverses on diesel ban

Got several news reports over night on Google Alerts that California Air Resources Board is dropping its proposed diesel mandates, since the current presidential administration and EPA are not making a move to approve them before 1/20/2025 and the incoming administration is very likely to challenge them.
Not clear if this extends to the emissions credits affecting new Diesel motor homes .

I saw this coming. Always a reach for the stars, then a pullback based on society sentiment. But they warm people up to the idea. Then in the future then move forward with the ban.

Well lets get this right. This relates to "California has withdrawn requests for the EPA to give the state authority to enforce rules limiting emissions from diesel-powered trains and big rigs."

As far as the "ban" (phase out of the sale of new diesel trucks and busses by 2036) the EPA did not approve that. This was separate from the main issue reported in the article.

My understanding of the article, the EPA has not approved proposed bans for the future. The current "ban" on new diesel motorhomes remains in place (unless they can come up with an electric chassis to get the credits, or however it works).

I don't see anything in the article linked in post #1 about the issue with motorhomes currently impacting sales.

CARB/ California did not 'BAN' sales. It just required the chassis for diesel powered motorhomes meet a standard that no one in the RV industry can meet. The manufactures of the chassis ordered their customers to withdraw for sale units not in California before the implementation date.

The MH dealers pulled all unsold units out of the state prior to the deadline.

That appears to still be fully in place, unless someone has a more detailed new source for information on the CARB actions.

This just puts on hold for four years their 'master plan' to eliminate diesel in the state eventually.

Maybe someone in Californ-eye-a finally realized the amount of tourist money that will be lost.

Plus the fact that OTR trucks may have to unload before crossing over and have the EV trucks pick the cargo up.

California should join with Texas and secede from the union.

I would think that renewable diesel and bio diesel would address this issue.

I suppose the truck and bus companies will be happy.

Modern diesel engines in trucks and buses have such clean exhaust with all the emission equipment that I can't see any issues. Maybe CARB came to it's senses.

Possibly all the hype about going EV everything is starting to loose some of it's shine with the realization there's no way the current electrical grid will be able to keep up.

Very disappointing. This is just a delay until sanity returns.

Since the regulations weren't coming into affect for a while yet, it might not even be a delay.

^^^Thanks, that's a good summary. The article also has a link to CARB "Myth vs Fact" page.

I didn't read the "myth vs fact" page, so correct me if I'm wrong. As far as I see it so far,
1. the current "ban" is still in place
2. the future ban on all new diesel truck sales is put on hold

The current "ban" is an EV mandate, or zero emissions mandate that none of the chassis makers have met, for diesel motorhome chassis. I'm guessing motorhome owners are the most difficult chassis owners to deal with, most invested in their vehicle, and most likely to sue. Perfectly understandable why a chassis maker is not going out on a limb to sell motorhome chassis's.

The current "bans" don't prevent any private motorhome from entering the state. Be aware that CA enforces EPA regulations more than other states, so think twice before bringing an emissions modified diesel especially into CA, that includes deletes, tuners, chips, and turned screws. CA has no problem seizing and destroying commercial trucks.

The current "bans" don't prevent any CA resident from buying and registering a used diesel motorhome (over 7,500m). The smog testing required is covered in other threads.
