Had it been me driving a mobility scooter with a true handicap I would have told them to go pound sand and engaged in a little civil disobedience. Imagine the headlines.......

I'm having a problem understanding this post. If a disabled person, like myself, is being denied reasonable accommodations by a campground, or by any other public access establishment, I would file an ADA complaint with the Attorney General, I would notify the area elected officials, I would notify appropriate news agencies, and I might initiate a law suit. Yea, I guess you could call me a real pain in the "A" when my feathers get ruffed.
However, having worked closely with security at many community events, I have research, and been informed that Segway, owned by Johnson & Johnson does not market their vehicle as an assistance device, and can be denied access since it is defined as a form of transportation not a form of assistance.
I the camper in the posted situation was riding a motorized scooter not normally used as an assistance device I can see where the camp host might have concerns about enforcing rules equitably.
Therefore, before I cast judgment on campground personnel I would really want a great deal more information.

Just a reminder that we need to keep our comments from becoming personal and let's stay on topic.
Thank you.

After reading through these posts I see where anything electric was not allowed in this particular camp ground. Its a rule they have for what ever reason.
To refer to government workers and the discussion becoming heated is not part of irv2's rules.
If we cannot discuss this or any other subject with out these response's than what can we discuss as adults.
To discuss this thread further my wife has been handicapped because of arthritis for 15 years it was a gradually process.
She has taken medications that were suppose to help her walk all they did was kill her kidney's with help from a doctor that didn't know what H he was doing.
To help my wife get around I purchased a three wheel scooter that she uses around camp grounds with myself walking beside her so she does not hit someone or have difficulty in her travels.
She has accidentally hit me and it will hurt as others have described she does not race around the camp ground, the speed can be adjusted to get up a grade but she will place control back to a slow speed as to not drain the battery and get more use of battery.
As yet we have not been stop from using in parks like DOLLY WOOD or camp grounds. When we make reservations we inquire if there are restrictions.

Totally agree. Just visited their website and sure enough, "golf carts, ATVs and MOTORIZED scooters are NOT allowed". No mention of electric scooters we all associate with handicap use.
That said, now realize that you are dealing with a 'camp host'...more than likely a person that has volunteered as a caretaker in exchange for a free camp site on a temporary basis.
The OP has not stated he asked to see clarification on the host's interpretation of the rule. If the host insisted on this path, I believe I would have ask that he contact his supervisors for conformation and in the meantime, the wife will continue to use her only means of getting around while in the park. If he has a problem with that he can contact the local police, or volunteered to make that call for him...that should get the paper trail started - but I think the host is merely not informed. Bob

If the OP could give us a picture of the electric scooter referenced, I'm sure it would help clarify whether we're discussing a 2-wheeled Vespa or Razor or a 3-wheeled Hoveround or Zip-r's like you see at the supermarket. We're getting tied up in what members perceive a "scooter" is.
I would also think such a device could be prescribed by a physician when necessary for patient mobility & having such documentation might eliminate (or at least reduce) it being questioned.

On edit,I cannot remove my previous post so it will have to stay and tick you off some more.

Lorna If I ruffled your feathers, I apologize it seemed that so many posts to the posters incident were being heavy handed on not so much a complaint but to his informative posting so others would be aware of the possibility of being denied mobility for the disabled. Never would I even suggest someone not be allowed to post their opinions whether they agreed with me or not.

I think this turned into a semantics problem. When I read scooter I never thought a handicapped person would be riding a 2 wheeled scooter (small motorcycle ) I thought Scooter Store Ads and thats what I pictured. I can see that there could be unintentional confusion.

Yep Dave, I can see a 74 year old lady with double hip replacement and neck/back surgery zipping around on an electric two wheeled scooter. Good call.
