CA New RV Purchase/Tax and Title/Reg in Illinois
Two questions:
1) I am a resident of Illinois. Considering buying my first (new) RV (Storyteller) from dealer in California and registering /licensing in IL. Since CA state/county/local sales taxes (8.5%) are lower than where I live in IL (9.0%), assume there is no reason to do the deliver to the state line approach. Just pay sales tax in CA to dealer and get a credit and pay a little more when I register and license back in IL?
2) Assume I will get a temporary tag from the dealer to drive back to IL. What I would like to do is spend a few weeks in CA/UT/CO exploring/offroading before driving home. Is it possible to overnight the registration/license paperwork and fees/extra sales taxes to IL and have them overnight the title and plates back to the dealer (essentially close the deal and let the RV sit at the dealer for a few days)?
Thanks much!

1). Yes, just keep your documentation.
2). Not sure how things work in IL, in CA the dealer provides you with temporary plates and registration. The official registration and metal plates are mailed directly to the RO. Does IL send these to the dealers? If so, then you will need to work that out with your dealer.

I moved from CA to IL in 2020. As I recall, IL will want to know the CA tax that you paid. If more than the IL tax, you are good. If less, they will want the difference.

Why not choose the RV you want in CA and buy from the Chicago IL dealership?

Be sure that IL recognizes Ca tax paid, not all states are reciprocal.

There are no IL dealers and the RV has been modified/upgraded from stock. Otherwise I would buy localiy.

I would think the dealer would know what to do as far as tax.
You could try calling a DMV office in Ca. if that is possible.

It might be worth asking the IL DMV is the temp tag can be extended for a modest fee.
Here in MO, you can extend your temp tag (or, you used to be able to do so) for about $3. That gave you another 30 days, if I remember.
That little bit of extra payment is likely less than overnighting anything from CA to wherever you happen to be.
Enjoy your new RV and have safe travels!

Consult with the selling dealer about the temporary tag. California has a variety of temporary types and the dealer may be able to issue you one with a time period as long as 90 days. Even a 30 day tag may be enough for your needs. See https://www.dmv.ca.gov/portal/vehicl...ating-permits/
It is doubtful the the Illinois DMV will send the new tags & title anywhere except your Illinois address of record or expedite the delivery, but call an IL DMV office and ask.

Oh, OK not a new one.
The storyteller website shows a dealer in Chicago.

Ask the dealer if things have changed, but I was told years ago that all vehicles sold in CA have to pay CA sales tax and register in CA. Unless you take delivery in another state. They would have to drive it to AZ or NV for a delivery cost.

I don't think that has changed, but HawkGuy isn't trying to avoid CA tax. Illinois will give him credit for it, so there is no need. This is covered in this official Illinois site.
