Yes the squirrel thing is true. We are close to where that is and it's all over the news here.

Don't get too worried about it. Bubonic Plague is routinely tested for in the areas where it can occur. When it's found, the areas are temporarily closed. CDC - Plague will address most of your concerns.

I would worry more about fleas and ticks in other parts of the country, much more common.

This has been an occurrence for as long as I've camping in California, at least 40 years. Don't worry about it.

There's good news though, the squirrels were captured by the State and taxed for carrying an unauthorized plague. The new revenue stream will be added to the other 862 new taxes.

There have been signs warning of plague infected wildlife at the campgrounds we use in SoCal for many years now. Bubonic plague is easily treatable these days. Just don't eat the roadkill unless it's thoroughly cooked.

When I was a kid, my Dad and his brother would take us boys along squirrel hunting. One day my cousin came home from school and told his Dad squirrels were in the same family as rats. From that day on my Uncle would never eat a squirrel. My cousin had to go hunting with Dad and I after that.
