Well so much for "hermetically sealed". The plastic didn't wrap all the way around the other sidewall.
I'm going to paint the rim with some VHT just to stop the rust, then have the new tire put on. In the meantime I'm also going to make a portable ramp so I can roll it up to the bumper, then turn it sideways and it'll only be a few inches to lift up onto the mount.
Dropping that thing down wasn't too bad, but liftIng it up from the ground with one person would be a challenge. Really just a two-by-four would probably be good enough, trimmed at the end so it can go into the hitch receiver.
This is the first time I've taken that spare down. They really had that thing torqued on with two nuts. I had to use a breaker bar with a two and a half foot galvanized pipe to break it loose. I didn't try the cordless impact gun, because I was afraid it might not handle it.

Here's my simple ramp. Just picked up a lumber tie and bent it, put some velcro underneath and screwed it to a 2 x 4 I had. Really works well. Just straddle the 2x4, roll the tire up, then turn it sideways, bear hug it and lift it up onto the mount. Can be taken down the same way. Actually would store in the bumper, but I'm afraid it might go flying out on a hard turn, so I'm keeping it in a crossbed shelf.

Yep, I carry a bottle jack, 3/4" breaker bar w/socket and extension, wood blocks to keep from rolling, because when you do get that tire problem, it will be somewhere where their is no cell service and it's up to you! That said, I have had NO tire issues since I switched to Michelins about 5 years ago. My mounted spare is underneath and it is a 20 year old Firestone.

Are many places sticklers on date codes? I generally only mount new tires but in this case I won't be.
Thanks much

WHY NOT??? Why dont you ask a dealer and not a bunch of tire expert wannabes?

If the rims are the nifty chrome or polished aluminum ones, the rear inners are not chromed (usually). The rim size is (should be) the same and will be interchangeable with the exception of the chrome/polish. Most well equipped garages and tire stores will be able to balance your tires.

Thinking further, BETTER than OLD would be to buy a new $80-$100 tire to use as spare, if you are adverse to spending $200-$300 for the Best?

I have had every local shop w/ short doors say they ONLY have 1-1/2-ton Jacks, and further, Insurance says cannot service anything outside the service bays. After a Roadside service event, and finding (my new to me RV) had a 12yo spare, the WM said same, and I had to REMOVE/ REINSTALL THE WHEELS MYSELF IN THE PARKING LOT. Even Costco/ WM with a tall door bay gave the exact same story.

The tire may look perfect, but it has aged. It doesn't have to be exposed to sunlight to deteriorate. Just exposure to air will leach additives out of the rubber compound, and cause its deterioration. It's not worth the risk.

I like to speak to people who have done this who own an RV. And I very rarely find any dealer service department (In any vehicle type/manufacturer) that knows their ass from a hole in the ground. Nor do i want to bother them w/ such a basic question when anyone who has an RV for a period of time that has had a tire changed probably knows the answer. Every once in a while I'll get to talk to a good tech but sadly good techs don't last long, they are usually service advisers very quickly or move up the chain fairly quickly. And when the manufacturer of my own RV cannot get me the paint code, any wiring diagrams or ANYTHING on my RV because they got bought out they are useless to me anyway. 9 times out of 10 message forums are full of very knowledgeable people. I weed out what I feel is inaccurate but there is a wealth of knowledge to be had here. I've pretty much seen and done everything in the short time I've been on this planet when it comes to pretty much everything w/ a motor but RVs are new to me.

Your Class-C is like a fully loaded 1-ton truck. Doubt they ever need a 6 ton floor jack when 99% of the vehicles they service total weigh is less than your rear axle.
Heavy Truck tire dealer is what you need

I think I may carry that just for the heck of it, and I have a 350 foot pound cordless impact wrench as well as breaker bars. Also have some heavy-duty three level leveling blocks that made that I could use as a jack pad. Maybe just in case for the times I'm away from cell service.
|
I doubt that any plastic leveling pad can support that load concentrated on the small base of the hydraulic jack. I suggest a 1/4" steel plate the size of your leveling pad.

These are the leveling blocks I made. They also have a piece of half inch plywood underneath, and all of it is glued and screwed together. I had a brand new tire put on the spare rim a few days ago, and got that mounted up on the back bracket (I keep white vinyl cover over it). Since my 8-ton bottle jacks are pretty darn old, I'm going to run over to Harbor Freight and pick up a 12-ton for $32. Even though my old jacks are working, the internal o-rings are probably not in great shape. I'll just keep them for light duty use, and maybe rebuild them later on.

I ran into this issue of lift not
being big enough. Once at costco
tire store and at an oil and go.
The oil and go was going to be a presale inspection on my dually.
Costco was going to replace the
5 year old junk Nexan tires. (bombs waiting to go off)
I hunted around and found places that could do it.

YES, the 8-TON WILL WORK, AND I jacked up a Front tire a few years back, (but will have to go see what size jack I have that I want to Improve). One owner pointed out that when laying UNDER a rig to get a bottle jack with a SHORT HANDLE/ LIMITED STROKE into proper position, where YOUR position cannot use BODY WEIGHT on the jack handle, SOME times BIGGER is better and can make strength to pump the jack considerably LESS... so a 12-ton, or 20-ton maybe more User Friendly. OTOH, 8-ton vs 6-ton MIGHT be just the ticket for YOUR rig and your body strength?... Sliding around that 75# wheel under a rig maybe another story?
