Question Cargo On Cargo Carrier May Block License Plate

I am thinking about buying a used one of these locally for my CLASS B.
Cargo Carrier

If it blocks the rear license plate when I have cargo on it, do I need to place the plate on the cargo carrier? Thanks,

As a police officer, I can only speak for my state, California. Here, the law would not only require you to re-locate the license plate, but add a light to illuminate it at night. While the light provision would rarely be enforced, the unobstructed view of the plate often is. I would venture to say that most states have similar laws.

Craig P. is right. I almost got a ticket when we lived in PA for a bike rack mounted to the step bumper of my truck. The officer let me off with a warning, but could have ticketed me.

They make license plate holders with a light that are made for boat trailers and the like. Check Walmart or an auto parts store. I would add a plug to the existing license plate light so you can unplug the wires when you remove the carrier. You'll have to remember to change over the plate to the other holder.

Florida is the same as previously posted. Many cargo carriers have a place for the license plate built into them. If it is a slow crime day, you'll be stopped.

The bike rack on my toad totally obscures the plate never been stopped anywhere east of the Mississippi. You results may vary.

I made a bumper mounted carrier for the dog pens which blocked the plate. I bought a spare light/plate mounting bracket and added it to the other side of the motorhome. Tapped the power off the rear taillight assembly. Worked nicely.
