Cargo Trailer Advice

Hi all,

My scout troop is looking to buy a new trailer to haul our gear. We currently have a 15 year old 12'x6' that the Troop has out grown. We are going to go with either a 16'x7' or 16'x8' enclosed cargo trailer.

After looking at several sites, I'm still trying to decide between a torsion suspension or a standard leaf spring suspension.

We camp at least once a month and travel anywhere from 15 miles to 100 miles from home. Once a year we travel around 400 miles for summer camp.

The longer trips are mostly on well paved roads and interstates, but some of the State Forests we use on our monthly camps have either rough dirt or gravel roads.

Is regular use on dirt and gravel ok for a torsion suspension or should we stick with the traditional leaf spring set up? I have experience with our current leaf spring setup getting fairly bumpy on the interstate when traveling at 70 mph and that is not fun with a van full of scouts.

We are hoping to keep this trailer with the Troop for at least the next 10 years.

Thanks for the advice,
Scout-B

Torsion bar suspension allows for lower floor heights, mainly for loading wheeled vehicles in danger of high centering on the ramp hinge. It's likely not a problem in your application. Do you balance your trailer tires? I do, and cannot for the life of me figure out why so many don't. I use balance beads so I never have to rebalance them and they ride smooth. I have torsion bar suspension on my Edge Low Hauler, designed for hauling 2 full dressed motorcycles. I have leaf springs on my 4x8 flatbed trailer. Both ride smooth with beads in the tires.
