That's a very outdated version. There are many out there on the net. One of the latest is to use black aluminum window screening in layers in the box. Extensive testing has shown that the black screen is about as effective as many solid metal heat absorbers and has great airflow. Also a small solar panel and electric fan aid the air flow without needing any extra power input.

The reason I know about this is that I've accumulated the best part of what I need to build two of these for the house. I learned about them from a friend in Finland who has about ten on his house that make heat on any sunny day, even when it's well below zero.

I think we're talking about two different things here. I believe that Cheap Heat is the name of a commercial system. I should have titled this thread "low-cost heat".

Joe, about 12-15 years ago Cheap Heat was introduced to the RV world; now it is renamed https://www.rvcomfortsystems.com/, thus the confusion.
What you linked to is interesting for making a hot-house in the spring for bedded plants.

I'm not at all sure we're all on the same page here. This link is very close to what I am working on. Or will be after I roof the house.

Interesting concept! It seems that would be great for people building off-the-grid homes!

Most people seem to be using them to reduce their winter power bills. My interest is that I have a shop I don't heat unless I'm in it. I don't get out there except weekends mostly. My thought was to have one of these to take the cold edge off so it wouldn't take so long to get up to comfortable temperature. I'm building a second one for the house because, why not?
