Class action suit re: propane bottle exchange scam.

If you ever thought exchanging an empty propane bottle or cylinder for a "full" one was a good idea read this.

FYI, you can only file claims for purchases made in Arizona, California, Iowa, Maine, Michigan, Minnesota, Nevada, New Mexico, North Carolina, North Dakota, South Dakota, Utah, or West Virginia. Claim forms have to be filed by March 8, $ 2.50 per exchange if you don't have proof of purchase, $ 5 if you happen to have a receipt for the exchange.

Don't care to get shorted on the fill but I have quit the exchange thing for a different reason. Twice I have had to put on a fresh cyl. during cooking and the valve was no good. There was no way to tighten the connection so it would not leak. This is over a dozen times or so and each time I was close to the store where I had done the exchange and no problem with the store. Lucky each time it was during store hours. I have two with known good valves and am now having them refilled. Jim.

The only reason I do an exchange is to get a newer bottle that doesn't need to be recertified. 20 pounders are ll you can get locally. Other then that, it's a rip off .

How many people keep a receipt for more than a day or two unless it is a business purchase?

Again the lawyers make a killing.

I use them to exchange out of date or damaged tanks only. And I test the tanks upon doing so.

Seems pretty generous that you can claim up to 50 cylinders at $2.50/ea without any receipt at all!

I never exchange bottles....always was suspicious of them and the bogus filling.

Costo sells new jugs and you go and fill them.

"Exchange-a-jug" is just another example of the "I want it now" attitude and lifestyle in this country. It's long been reported that those exchanges short the propane but seems many don't care/know and it's too much trouble to go to reputable propane refillers.

Hummmmmm

Folks exchange old/out of date cylinders for a in-date cylinder and then complain about it not being filled to 80% level

Seems like tit for tat

No one does.
But if you charge the purchase with a credit card you will have proof that you bought "something" from that store. Maybe that will be good enough for proof of purchase.

Coincidentally, a few minutes ago I advised a family member in the Houston area about the cost of Amerigas exchange vs filling at UHaul. It's $1.40/lb at Home Depot (Amerigas) for 15 lb, and $0.77/lb, and they may fill to the full 20 lb at UHaul. Slightly more than half the unit cost.

Amerigas is still claiming they can only fill to 80% to allow for expansion, hence the 15 lb fill, even though a full to the top "20 lb" bottle would have 25 lb of liquid propane in it (or 20 lb at 80%, hence the designation as a 20 lb bottle). It stinks of false advertising, though I'm sure the lawyers have them covered. But it's misleading for sure.
